Middlesbrough v Aston Villa

  • FA Cup match at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough, 5:30pm (TV: BBC One & iPlayer)

Both Teams to Score

Aston Villa travel to Middlesbrough on the back of an unconvincing run of Premier League performances that has seen them take four points from their last three games, avoiding a total disaster by snatching a last-gasp win over Burnley last Saturday.

Villa have been uncharacteristically poor at the back in recent weeks, conceding seven goals in their last four league games, and there is every chance that Boro will score against them.

The visitors have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight away games in all competitions and face a side that has found the back of the net in five of their last six games at the Riverside.

Boro’s form has been indifferent in recent weeks, with Michael Carrick’s side collecting nine points from their last available 24 while also booking their place in the League Cup semi-final.

However, they should raise their level with Premier League opposition coming to town and can breach the Villa defence at least once. They are highly likely to concede at the other end, however, having kept just once clean sheet in their last eight games, while their top-flight opponents have 43 goals in 20 Premier League games this season.

    Ollie Watkins to Score

Ollie Watkins is enduring something of a dry patch in front of goal. The Villa forward has scored just one goal in his last six league appearances and will be hoping to rediscover his goalscoring form at the Riverside.

All of Watkins’ last three league goals have come away from home, while eight of his 14 goals in all competitions have come away from Villa Park. He is good value to mark his first game of 2024 with a goal.

Middlesbrough Goalkeeper to make 4 or more Saves

Whatever the result on Saturday evening, Boro goalkeeper Tom Glover is likely to be busy. Villa average 5.4 shots on target per game in the Premier League this season, the fifth-highest rate in the division.

Unai Emery’s side are one of the most exciting teams in the league and should be at full strength for this tie, considering they have an eight-day break to look forward to.

Villa are likely to pepper the Boro goal with shots and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Glover was called into action on several occasions.

          Chelsea v Preston

          • FA Cup match at Stamford Bridge, London, 5:30pm (TV: BBC iPlayer)

          Over 3.5 Goals

They haven’t been convincing, but back-to-back wins for Chelsea are extremely welcome for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Chelsea were made to sweat against both Crystal Palace and Luton but did just about enough to claim two wins on the spin, and they can now make it three wins in a row ahead of their League Cup semi-final first leg against Boro on Tuesday night.

Pochettino’s side have scored eight goals in their last four league games and will be confident of breaching the Preston defence on Saturday evening.

PNE have lost four of their last five games, conceding 11 goals in the process, and will almost certainly concede at Stamford Bridge. They hold some hope of scoring at the other end, facing a Chelsea side that has not kept a clean sheet in 11 games in all competitions. There should be plenty of goals at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer to Score or Assist

Cole Palmer has been one of the few bright sparks in Chelsea’s dismal season to date. The youngster has made a huge impact since signing from Manchester City in the summer, scoring eight goals and registering six assists in 15 starts in all competitions for the Blues.

He has been in particularly fine form in recent weeks, scoring four times and registering two assists in his last six appearances in all competitions. Palmer is good value to continue his fine form against Championship opposition on Saturday evening.
