Luton v Chelsea
Premier League match at Kenilworth Road
Saturday 12:30pm
TV: TNT Sports
It’s relentless, isn’t it?
You feel like you’ve got a nice little run of jokes at your mates during the festive period so you can laugh at their football club, only for them to be playing again forty-eight hours later, with you having to come up with new punchlines.
Chelsea are one of those sides. The irony of course is that a run of good form to them is seeing them slip into the top ten rather than in the Champions League spots. It’s like their inconsistency has their billion-quid spending spree contextualised differently to the rest of the league.
Luton is a fine example of this. If they win, you reckon they’ve done well in a tricky contest, but you’d expect Liverpool and Manchester City to come away with three points.
On a personal level, what totally different existences living in Chelsea and Luton are – a proper cultural clash. Let’s get into it.
Chelsea to Win
Up the Chels. It even sounds stupid, doesn’t it? One of the very few things that wasn’t stupid about their season, though, was how easily they dispatched Luton in their first meeting.
Yes, it was in the blissful surrounds of west London where you could leave your bike unguarded while this clash takes place in the back of an Asda, but that’s not the point.
Schematically, these two match up quite well for the Blues and I’d take them to repeat one of the very few high points from their campaign thus far, particularly coming off the back of what felt like a functional win over similarly set up opposition in Crystal Palace.
Cole Palmer to Score
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino relies on a lot of unreliable outlets to grab him goals. Some of the squad sound like Pro Evo defaults; he expects Raheem Sterling to actually pass the ball, Mykhailo Mudryk is the most expensive winger who’s both the best and worst player in the league – often in the same game, Nicolas Jackson is still living inside his head and Christopher Nkunku was only just given his first bloody start.
Cole Palmer is coming off a suspension so is a rare fresh talent at this time of year, and he’s been granted penalty duties. To add to that, he’s also going to get space in or around the box because of Luton’s low block.

Luton Goalkeeper to Make Four or More Saves
I beg of you to look at Thomas Kaminski’s Wikipedia page. He looks like he’s off to his debutant ball at the age of 30, it’s quite weird.
But while he’s not been busy dancing to Party Rock Anthem, he has been engaged in stopping shots. His 69 saves are the fourth-most in the league this year, and while Chelsea have lost their last four away league games, they’ve managed 48 shots in those clashes.
Christopher Nkunku to have 1 or more Shots on Target
I love him. And not just because his surname is so much fun to say, but because he’s a quality footballer. He’s in line for consecutive starts, and will no doubt be shooting on sight after his success in finding the net on his debut.
Ross Barkley to have 1 or more Shots on Target
Speaking of someone keen to impress, Ross Barkley has been the unexpected shining light for Luton in the league this year and is facing his former side.
He still takes up such clever positions like he did in his younger days at the Blues and I’d back him to have his moment.
Again, within context, ‘his moment’ is hitting the target. We’ve come a long, long way together.
