Liverpool v West Ham
League Cup match at Anfield
Wednesday, 8pm
TV: Sky Sports Football
Both teams to Score
Liverpool were held scoreless at Anfield for the first time this season in a drab 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Sunday, but there is little chance of a repeat when West Ham come to town in the League Cup on Wednesday.
Liverpool have scored 21 goals in eight home league games this season at a rate of almost three per game, and scored three against West Ham in a 3-1 home win earlier in the season.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been far from infallible at the back this season. They conceded three sloppy goals against Fulham earlier in December in a thrilling 4-3 victory at Anfield and, more recently, came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park after being outplayed for much of the game.
West Ham, on the other hand, have scored in all but one of their league away games this season and have already breached the Liverpool defence at Anfield. There is a good chance that they will do so again.
Over 6.5 Liverpool Corners
Whatever the result on Wednesday night, it is virtually guaranteed that Liverpool will dominate possession and territory. David Moyes’ West Ham boast an average possession of just 41.7%, the fifth-lowest in the league, and have recorded 36% possession or lower in more than half of their away league games.
The Hammers have faced the fifth-most shots in the league this season and are likely to face a barrage of Liverpool shots on Wednesday night. Klopp’s side had 34 shots against United on Sunday, winning 12 corners, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they posted similar numbers against West Ham.
Liverpool have won 65 corners in eight home league games this season at a rate of over eight per game and it would be surprising if they didn’t record a similar tally against West Ham.

Over 3.5 Cards
Neither Liverpool nor West Ham boast particularly good disciplinary records. Liverpool have picked up 30 bookings and four red cards in 17 league games – the 13th-best disciplinary record in the league – while West Ham have picked up 42 yellows and a single sending off, leaving them ninth in the disciplinary table.
Both sides average two cards per game or more and are likely to pick up at least four cards between them on Wednesday.
The sides do boast a better disciplinary record in the League Cup, with Liverpool picking up two bookings in two games and West Ham picking up just one yellow card in two games.
However, this is a quarter-final and tensions should be higher with a place in the last four at stake.
Liverpool Goalkeeper to make 3 or more Saves
Whether Klopp sticks with Alisson or gives Caoimhin Kelleher a run-out, the Liverpool goalkeeper is likely to be relatively busy. Liverpool boast the joint-best defensive record in the league, but they have still been sloppy at the back, keeping just six clean sheets in their opening 17 games and none in the League Cup.
They have faced a relatively high average of 11.7 shots per game in the league and have faced 16 shots on target in their last five league games. In the League Cup, they have faced eight shots on target in their two games against Leicester and Bournemouth and could face a similar average against West Ham.
Moyes’ side are adept at hitting sides on the counter away from home, managing seven shots on target from just 22% away at Brighton and four shots on target from 36% possession at Anfield. They can cause problems for the Liverpool ‘keeper on Wednesday.
Jarrod Bowen to have 3 or more Shots
Jarrod Bowen scored in the league fixture at Anfield and his performance will be crucial if West Ham are to cause an upset in the League Cup. Bowen has been enjoying a sensational season for the Hammers, especially away from home.
Seven of Bowen’s ten league goals this season have come away from home and West Ham will look to him for inspiration on Wednesday.
He averages 2.7 shots per game in the league this season and is by far the most likely West Ham player to get on the scoresheet. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he tried his luck at least three times.
