Rangers v Aberdeen

Rangers and Aberdeen meet in the League Cup final on Sunday at Hampden, with both clubs coming off the back of European victories. While the Gers travelled to Spain to claim a progress-clinching victory over Real Betis, Aberdeen stunned an Eintracht Frankfurt side that overcame Bayern Munich days earlier to win 2-1, despite making eight outfield changes.

The Dons have proven a difficult side to predict this season as they have blown hot and cold throughout the campaign. Against Rangers, they have proven to be particularly dangerous. At Ibrox, a 3-1 victory proved the end of Michael Beale’s reign at the club, while they came closer than any team so far to break Philippe Clement’s undefeated record in a 1-1 draw. Only a controversial late penalty denied them.

Abdallah Sima to have 2 or more shots on target

Sima is Rangers’ man in form and, in recent weeks, has been their major offensive outlet. It is surprising to see such healthy odds on him simply hitting the target twice.

After all, it was Sima who got the ball rolling against Betis as he scored early on, continuing a streak of four matches in which he has found the net. He also accounted for two of Rangers’ five shots on target in Seville.

He leads Rangers in shots per game in the Premiership this season with 3.3 – second in the league behind Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland – and also scored against the Dons when the sides met at Ibrox. Expect him to be Rangers’ main threat at Hampden.

Bojan Miovski to have 1 or more shots on target

Miovski has been Aberdeen’s undoubted ace in what has been a tricky season, with the North Macedonian scoring 12 times in 25 matches. Indeed, he netted when the Dons last faced Rangers on November 26.

The 24-year-old was also on target against Hearts a week ago while he was missing entirely from the team that defeated Frankfurt in midweek because of an injury. Having trained normally on Friday, suggesting that he will be able to take up his place in the starting XI without too many issues.

With numerous reports that clubs are monitoring his progress ahead of the January transfer window, he will be doing everything to turn in an eye-catching display here.

    Aberdeen over 2.5 cards

Aberdeen have found themselves sliding down the disciplinary table of the Scottish Premiership in recent weeks, with Robson’s side picking up a spate of bookings in recent matches.

The Dons have seen 12 bookings in their last four domestic outings, picking up at least three cautions in three of those games. When they last met Rangers, four players went into the book, which was to be expected given the prickly nature of the relationship between these sides.

Although referee Don Robertson did not show a single booking on the only occasion he refereed Aberdeen this season – a 4-0 win over Ross County – this will be the officials’ first major final and it is unknown how he will approach disciplinary matters in this game.

Graeme Shinnie to be shown a card

The onus is on the Aberdeen captain to be a dominant force in midfield, and that could mean taking one for the team at some stage in this game by committing a tactical foul or making an aggressive tackle.

Shinnie sits fourth in the Scottish Premiership count for fouls per game, while he has been booked four times already this season. He is likely to be asked to push the boundaries of what is acceptable at times in this match, and could easily overstep the mark at some point.

Aberdeen’s most-booked players, centre backs Slobodan Rubezic and Stefan Gartenmann are both likely to begin the game on the bench, making Shinnie the pick of their players in this market.
