Rangers to win

Sunday’s Scottish Premiership clash between Aberdeen and Rangers promises to be a high-octane encounter, with the strong rivalry between these teams expected to come to the fore once again at Pittodrie. Aberdeen’s 3-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox was enough to finally see the end of Michael Beale at the Gers, but the Light Blues have been a very different team since that day, going undefeated in eight matches and winning seven of those.

Philippe Clement has brought a new lustre to the Glasgow outfit, with the league matches he has overseen typically won with some to spare. The Dons, on the other hand, continue to be a side that blow hot or cold.

This was never better illustrated than their 6-0 defeat against Celtic prior to the international break, and while Barry Robson will surely have his team more competitive than they were that day, it will take a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes if they are to claim anything from their first home match in a month.

Aberdeen have lost only one of their last four against Rangers over the course of 90 minutes, but expect Clement’s new-look Gers to be too strong for them.

Over 2.5 Goals

One of Aberdeen’s major issues all season is that they are a team that cannot stop conceding goals. Across Premiership and European matches this season they have leaked fewer than two goals only five times in 19 games, with four of these games coming in a burst at the end of September and beginning of October.

Rangers, meanwhile, are looking like an increasingly slick offensive unit under Clement, who has seen his side net at least two goals in all but one of the fixtures he has overseen. This combination adds up to trouble for the home side, but also a fixture that produces more than 2.5 goals.

Over 2.5 Rangers Cards

Rangers and Aberdeen are the two sides that are presently top of the Scottish Premiership disciplinary table, barely picking up on average one booking per match. A quiet fixture should be forecast on the disciplinary front then, right? Wrong.

This is one of the fiercest matchups in Scottish football outside the Old Firm game and always has a competitive flavour to it. This was illustrated in the previous match at Ibrox, when there were five cards shown, including four to the home side.

On top of this, referee Nick Walsh is an official who is keen to show cards. Across the 13 matches in all competitions he has overseen this season, he has shown four cards on 11 occasions, including each of his two previous Rangers fixtures.

This match, meanwhile, means a lot to the visiting side who will feel they have a point to prove after losing to the Dons at Ibrox. Expect it to be a physical affair with plenty of work for the referee, especially from the away side.

Danilo to score or assist

One of the principle benefits that Rangers have seen since Clement took command is the flourishing of striker Danilo, who had been peripheral under Beale. In particular, he has combined expertly with Todd Cantwell in what is fast becoming one of the most dangerous partnerships in Scotland.

Interestingly, both were absent last time Rangers tackled the Dons. Danilo has two goals and an assist in his last 151 minutes of Premiership football and, while he has rarely started for the Gers, that is slowly changing.

Coming off an international break in which he has not been away but many of his teammates have, he should expect plenty of minutes, and expect him to take his chance to shine.

Over 6.5 Rangers Corners

Rangers will expect to dominate both possession and territory in this match. Ideally, they would like to put Aberdeen under pressure with a very vertical style of football, and Clement’s side are liable to rack up a high corner count as a consequence.

In the Belgian’s four league games in charge, he has seen his side only once failed to hit the seven corner mark. Indeed, Rangers average 6.17 corners won per game, the fourth highest tally in the league but a figure that is rising.

Conversely, Aberdeen are one of a handful of clubs that concede over 6 on average, and put on the back foot against a confident opponent, it’s reasonable to expect that figure to be higher on this occasion.
