Wednesday 12:30am: Brazil v Argentina World Cup Qualification match, Maracana, Rio de Janeiro
Argentina to Win
Tempers certainly flared in Argentina’s recent loss to Uruguay on home soil. Lionel Messi was seen grabbing Mathias Olivera’s throat but received no booking. Maybe winning eight Ballon D’Ors comes with a free VAR-need-not-apply card.
Regardless, the away side have won eight of their nine games since winning the World Cup and have won all three of their away games since the final in Qatar.
Brazil are in trouble. They’ve failed to win any of their last three fixtures, drawing with Venezuela and losing to both Uruguay and Colombia. They’re also missing Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Casemiro among others. With such an injury list there’s plenty of value in the Argentina to Win odds.
Both Teams to Score
Granted Brazil are missing a good few of their normal starting XI but they’ve scored eight over their last five and have scored 12 over their last four on home soil since the World Cup. In scoring in six of their last eight home games against their oldest of rivals they should get on the scoresheet at least once.
Argentina have seven goals over their last five fixtures and seven over their last three on the road, we reckon they’ll be good for at least two.
Over the last five Brazil v Argentina meetings on Brazilian soil, we’ve seen 6, 7, 7, 3 and 5 bookings.
Brazil are probably going to have to surrender possession here, the inexperience in their ranks too will mean they’re likely to commit the majority of fouls.
This being a derby plus the fact that the new rules regarding dissent coming into force have seen an upswing in bookings across world football means we should see at least six cards.
Lionel Messi to Score
Former Barcelona and PSG man, Messi has faced off 13 times against Brazil, scoring a total of five goals.
With eight goals over his last seven games in an Argentine shirt he’s likely to be landing the ball into the back of the Brazilian goal, particularly against an injury-hit home side.
Gabriel Martinelli to have 1 or more Shots on Target
Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli was on target for Brazil in their loss to Colombia on Friday last and will be part of an attacking three, playing support to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Barcelona’s Raphinha here.
We should see some decent link-up play between the three of these when they get forward and the Gunner certainly isn’t afraid of having a pop. We’re backing him to test the reflexes of Emiliano Martinez between the Argentine sticks.
