Both Teams to Score

New Zealand are ranked 45 places below Ireland in the current FIFA rankings but there’s little doubt that Ireland’s place will fall a few notches after yet another defeat on Saturday last in Amsterdam to the Netherlands.

Everyone and his dog presumes that this will be the final game in what has been a rather underwhelming reign of Stephen Kenny. What most of us thought had been the perfect appointment and one that pointed to the future with hope has ended in resigned failure after a qualification campaign that saw the Boys in Green only taking six points from two wins over Gibraltar, which isn’t even a real country.

The players wax lyrical about playing for Kenny however and they certainly owe him. He’s, almost certainly, going to lose his job because they’ve failed to deliver over and over again. They’re going to want to repay him with something here and the home fans too. Ireland have scored 15 over their last 10 home games so should be scoring at least.

New Zealand aren’t very good, there’s no sugar coating it but Ireland rarely keep any clean sheets, indeed they’ve kept just three over their last 10 at home, against Gibraltar, Lithuania and Scotland so you’d have to expect they’re unlikely to keep the away side scoreless.

A Goal Score in Both Halves

There have been a few silver linings to Kenny’s time in charge. The first being the amount of new and young talent he’s brought into the fold. There are too many to mention here but anyone who follows Ireland will know the names.

Another was that the team tended to start quite well in games. Even against the Netherlands, Ireland were the better team until they conceded and enjoyed the lion’s share of possession for the remainder of the first half and pushed for an equaliser towards the end.

We’re expecting something similar here although against a side who have conceded 10 over their last five and 10 over their last five on the road we can certainly see at least one goal per half.

James McClean to have 1 or more Shots on Target

James McClean will earn his 103th Republic of Ireland cap here and he’s enjoyed some great highs and deflating lows in a green shirt. Whether he starts here or comes on he’s going to try and turn back the clock a bit, drop the shoulder, and the head, and make a beeline for the goal. On his last appearance for the Boys in Green the Derryman will be eager to get his name on the scoresheet.

    Over 5.5 Ireland Corners

Ireland will surely see plenty of the ball here and with New Zealand sitting back, as they tend to do, the Boys in Green should have plenty of creative opportunities.

Over their last five home games in Dublin, Stephen Kenny’s side have gotten a minimum of six corners in all of them, including against the Netherlands and France. The hosts should easily get six corners here conceded at least six in four of their last five on the road.

    Ireland to Win

Call us hopeful romantics but it being not only Stephen Kenny’s swansong but also McClean’s we should see the home side going for it. They know they’ve failed to deliver and they know too that they’re in the shop window for the next manager. The away side have lost seven of their last 11 fixtures and all five of their most recent away games.

Ireland’s leaky defence should concede but Ireland have the players to at least get a second and take a rare win.
