Monday 7.45pm: North Macedonia v England
UEFA Euro 2024 Qqualifier at Tose Proeski Arena, Skopje
TV: Channel 4

England may have already qualified for the Euros but they have an opportunity to sign their qualifying campaign and 2023 off in style with an away win at a tricky location. North Macedonia isn’t an easy place to go but a win would be a great way for Gareth Southgate’s men to finish off before next March’s friendlies ahead of the Euros in the summer in Germany.

England (-2)

After that poor showing in the 2-0 win over Malta on Friday I’m sure that there are plenty of people surprised that I’m backing England (-2) on the handicap and, on first glance, I can’t really blame them. England were really below their standards in that game but I’m expecting them to be far more at it in Skopje.

The North Macedonians have been eliminated from playoff contention but make no mistake, the arrival of England and their Premier League stars in Skopje is a big deal. The atmosphere will be fierce and I think that’ll spur on the England team, who seem to perform better in higher pressure situations than games at Wembley in which they’re expected to swat away sides. You also have to remember that when these teams met in June at Old Trafford we saw England win 7-0.

Both Teams to Score? No

As much as people love to get on the back of Gareth Southgate for his style of play and say how terrible Harry Maguire is, the reality is that both the style of play and Harry Maguire are part of the reason why England are so good defensively now. Through seven qualifying games they’ve allowed just three goals, while scoring 21.

They kept a clean sheet last time they faced North Macedonia and with their opponents on Monday scoring just nine times in the seven games, four of which were against Malta, I don’t think they’ll be troubling Jordan Pickford’s goal much. I fancy Both Teams To Score? No.

Over 2.5 Goals

Over 2.5 Goals has landed in four of England’s seven qualifiers so far, but lets not forget that 7-0 win over this very team back in June. It’s also landed in four of seven of North Macedonia’s qualifiers too. With the quality on the pitch for England I’m expecting a number of goals and that should be more than enough to hit the Over here as the team look to bounce back after that poor game at Wembley on Friday.

    Harry Kane to score anytime

I’m expecting Southgate to field his best XI here in what will be a tricky away atmosphere, that means the captain Harry Kane will start again and he’s love to bag two goals like he did when England faced North Macedonia in June. Kane’s been in mind-blowing form for Bayern Munich this season, scoring 17 Bundesliga goals in just 11 games.

He’s added another four in four Champions League games and lets not forget eight goals in seven games in this Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. This is a man at the peak of his powers and I expect Kane To Score on Monday night.

    Bukayo Saka to score anytime

If Southgate plays his best team then it’s surely going to mean Bukayo Saka getting recalled to the starting lineup after being on the bench on Friday. Saka is a key man for both club and country now and decimated the North Macedonians when these teams met last.

In that game at Old Trafford we saw Saka use his speed and guile to take the North Macedonians apart, scoring a hat-trick in the process. I doubt he’ll recreate that feat but he has a real chance of scoring again here.
