Ireland’s play-off hopes officially came to an end on Thursday night, but Stephen Kenny’s side will still want a result in Amsterdam to avoid finishing their group campaigns with zero points against teams that aren’t Gibraltar.
It has been a campaign to forget for Kenny’s men, with very few standout moments, but they should play with some pride at the Johan Cruyff ArenA in what could well be the manager’s last competitive game in charge.
Unfortunately for Ireland, they come up against a Dutch side that needs three points to guarantee their place at the Euros next summer, so they are unlikely to find their hosts in a sympathetic mood.
Ronald Koeman’s side have improved as the qualifying campaign has gone on, starting with a wretched 4-0 defeat in France and an unconvincing 3-0 win over Gibraltar.
They have since beaten Greece home and away and came from behind against Ireland in Dublin to virtually secure their place at next summer’s Euros.
Koeman’s side did lose at home to France in the last set of qualifiers, but they also became the first team to score against the World Cup runners-up in qualifying.
There is little hope of Ireland picking up any sort of result and all signs point toward a comfortable Dutch win.
Over 3.5 Ireland corners
Ireland have won an unusual number of corners for a side that has scored just two goals against teams that are not Gibraltar in qualifying.
In their five games against France, Greece, and the Netherlands, Kenny’s side have won an impressive 28 corners at a rate of over five per game but have scored in just two of those games, one of them coming via a penalty against the Dutch.
They won six corners when Koeman’s side travelled to Dublin in September – the most of any side against them in this qualifying campaign – and have only failed to win four corners or more in one game so far (away to France).
They will surely have a go given that they have literally nothing to lose and they might just put some pressure on the Dutch goal, even if they are likely to live off scraps in terms of possession.

Josh Cullen to commit two or more fouls
No Irish player has committed more fouls than Josh Cullen during this forgettable qualifying campaign.
The Burnley midfielder averages two fouls per game in Group B and is good value to maintain that average here.
Ireland have committed 82 fouls in seven qualifiers to date, including 16 fouls against the Dutch in Dublin.
Kenny’s side are averaging close to 12 fouls per game and are highly likely to reach that figure against a neat and tidy opponent. Cullen, sitting at the base of the Irish midfield, is likely to be responsible for a few of those fouls.
Evan Ferguson to have two or more shots
Evan Ferguson has had to live off scraps in every Ireland game that has not been against Gibraltar, but the talented Brighton forward has not been shy of having a go.
In five appearances during this qualifying campaign, Ferguson has average 2.2 shots per game, letting fly on two occasions in the insipid 2-0 home defeat against Greece last month.
He looks likely to lead the line having overcome an injury that kept him out of Brighton’s draw with Sheffield United and will be keen to make his mark against one of Europe’s elite sides.
Ireland, meanwhile, have recorded quite a high shot count considering they have scored such a lamentable number of goals.
Kenny’s side average over 15 shots per game in qualifying and over ten shots per game when Gibraltar are taken out of the equation.
They will have chances and Ferguson is the most likely player to take on a shot.
Wout Weghorst to score anytime
Wout Weghorst scored the winner when the sides met in Dublin two months ago and the former Manchester United forward is good value to get on the scoresheet again.
Weghorst is the joint-top scorer in qualifying for the Netherlands, scoring two goals in six appearances so far.
His goal tally highlights how hit and miss they have been in this campaign, with Koeman’s side only scoring ten goals in six games in qualifying – only one more than Ireland.
However, they should make home advantage count and Weghorst could once again prove key to unlocking the defence.
The burly striker caused Ireland all sorts of problems in September and has the physicality to mix it with the likes of Nathan Collins and Shane Duffy.
