Saturday 5:30pm: Bournemouth v Newcastle
Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth
TV: Sky Sports Main Event & Premier League

Having emerged from the relegation zone with a win over Burnley in match week 10, Bournemouth returned there last Sunday thanks to Luton’s unexpected draw with Liverpool. As the Hatters travel to Old Trafford at 3pm on Saturday, the Cherries will probably be a further three points adrift when this game gets underway at 5:30pm.

Newcastle won 8-0 at fellow strugglers Sheffield United earlier in the campaign, so they’re not the opponent Andoni Iraola would pick to face when he’s among the front runners in the ‘next manager to leave’ market.

But there’s always better and worse times to face a team. The Magpies reportedly have 11 players missing through injury or suspension at the time of writing, which might offer Bournemouth a better chance of an upset than they’d normally get.

Newcastle to Win

Newcastle could return to their pre-takeover days and it would still be tough to make a case for a home win though.

Despite only having amassed six points so far this season, the expected goals (xG) data implies Bournemouth have deserved just two. Meriting draws with Burnley and West Ham won’t count for a lot against a Newcastle side who the xG says should be second in the league.

Not that former Cherries’ boss Eddie Howe has a good away record in 2023/24. Losses at Manchester City and Brighton are fair enough but draws with the Hammers and Wolves feel like four points dropped. Howe’s injury-hit squad was beaten 2-0 at Borussia Dortmund in midweek too.

Their previous away game was a Carabao Cup win at Manchester United with a weakened side. While that’s not the astounding result it once was, it showed how Newcastle’s squad can cope with an away game against a team struggling to buy a win.

And Bournemouth certainly fall into that category, so start your Bet Builder with a victory for Newcastle.

    Both Teams to Score, No

If the visitors are to win, they’ll likely need to keep a clean sheet as goals look thin on the ground in their patched up starting XI.

The good news for Howe is that his defence isn’t looking too bad. First choice goalkeeper Nick Pope will be between the sticks, with Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar in the back four. Jamaal Lascelles has been playing well since he started covering for Sven Botman too, leaving only a potential issue at left-back.

As only Burnley have scored fewer goals than Bournemouth – and only by one at that – Newcastle should be able to shut their hosts out at their own party. Backing ‘no’ in the Both Teams to Score market is the way to go.

    Anthony Gordon to Score

With Alexander Isak already out until after the forthcoming international break (sorry to remind you that it kicks in after this weekend), Howe didn’t need former Bournemouth man Callum Wilson picking up an injury in Newcastle’s Champions League defeat on Tuesday.

While it’s not yet confirmed if Wilson will be available, he is surely unlikely to start. Assuming that is the case then Anthony Gordon has to be your goal scorer selection.

He is the club’s third top scorer in the Premier League this season, and holds the same position in Newcastle’s expected goal standings. The absence of Isak and Wilson would push him to the top of the players in the team at the Vitality Stadium, so he’ll carry the Magpies’ strongest threat.

    Over 9.5 Corners

The recent meetings of these teams have been consistent for corners, with three of the last four matches featuring nine and the other seeing 10.

Newcastle’s league matches this season have seen 9.9 on average to basically stick to that pattern. However, four of the six games at the Vitality have seen at least 12 and the fewest has been eight. Considering all this, we should be on steady ground with an over 9.5 corners bet.

    Over 3.5 Cards

Match referee Chris Kavanagh showed a solitary yellow card in each of his previous two visits to Bournemouth, and he’s below Premier League average for bookings per game too.

He did book a Newcastle player for time wasting when he last did one of their matches, though, and only three teams in the Premier League were cautioned more times for that offence last season.

It’s easy to picture the Magpies relying on such methods to see the result out if it’s a tight game here. With at least four cards in both of their meetings with Bournemouth in 2022/23, Over 3.5 cards are on the cards on Saturday night.
