A great slate of Champions League games this week gets underway with the huge Group F clash between Dortmund and Newcastle. The German side won the reverse tie at St James’ Park to take second spot in the group behind PSG.
We’re not at must-win territory just yet but it feels like a loss here would give the Toon a mountain to climb in order to qualify for the knockout stages. Let’s see what could be in store…
Both Teams to Score
For the first leg of our Bet Builder we’re going to be backing both teams to score. Despite the reverse fixture having just the solitary Dortmund goal, I think we should see both clubs bag here.
Dortmund have scored an average of two goals per game in the Bundesliga this season while Newcastle have scored a huge 27 times in 11 games. That bodes well for multiple goals, especially when you consider the importance of this game. When the first goal is scored I expect the game to really open up as the other team chases, which should lead to more chances.
Callum Wilson to Score
If anybody is going to score for Newcastle then it’s surely going to be Callum Wilson. He’s yet to score his first career Champions League goal but this game, which will be his first start in the competition, presents his best chance – especially given Dortmund are coming in to this off the back of a 4-0 hammering by Bayern Munich.
Domestically we’ve seen Wilson score six in his past seven Premier League games and he comes into this in good form, despite drawing a blank against Arsenal at the weekend.
Niclas Fullkrug to Have 1 or More Shots on Target
The 30-year old arrived at Dortmund this summer from Werder Bremen and hasn’t really hit the ground running, having scored just twice in 11 games across the Bundesliga and Champions League. That said, he’s been getting in positions to score, particularly in Europe where his three appearances, two of which were starts, having drawn an average of 2.3 shots per game.
I’m expecting him to be the focal point again for Dortmund here and he should be able to get a shot on target even if he fails to score.

Dortmund to Commit 10 or More Fouls
Given the importance of this game qualification for the knockout stages, we should see a hard-fought battle between two teams who both need to get the three points. With that in mind I think we’ll see a lot of fouls from both teams but I like the odds on Dortmund to commit 10 or more fouls.
They’ve committed an average of 10.5 fouls per game domestically this season, despite generally facing a lower standard of opposition. When they’ve competed in the Champions League that has risen to 11.3 fouls per game, which Newcastle have been fouled an average of 13.3 times per game in the UCL.
Bruno Guimaraes to Commit 2 or More Fouls
To wrap up our Bet Builder we’re going to be backing Newcastle’s hot headed Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes to commit two or more fouls. Guimaraes is a superb player, who dictates play for his side, while also being key in stopping opposition attacks.
Part of that ability to read opposition play means he has to do the dirty work and that’s seen him get booked five times in the Premier League, twice in the Champions League and once in the League Cup already this season. Across all competitions for both club and country he’s averaged 1.6 fouls committed per game. Given the nature of this match I’m expecting at least two on Tuesday.
