Newcastle United v Arsenal
Saturday, 5:30pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event
Newcastle are full of confidence going into this. It was a convincing win at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Normally, you’d expect them to be a bit apprehensive ahead of a fixture like this. Arsenal were fantastic last season and have started this season so well, but I’ve got a feeling Newcastle might have the edge here on Saturday.
Being at St. James’ Park is huge for them that could see them get a result.
Combining so many games in the cups, in Europe along with the pushing for top 4 isn’t easy.
The most important thing for a club at the Champions League level is to consistently qualify for it – big nights are amazing, but you want it to become standard, that you’re there every year.
Part of it is down to experience. At Liverpool, sometimes we’d play a big Champions League game midweek and the next Saturday you’d have a 12:30 kick-off and it’d feel a bit like the crowd was still hungover from the previous game.
As players, it’s down to you then. We had characters who made sure we won those games. They almost felt more important to get through because it’s easy to get up for a big game in Europe, but then you’d have Sunderland or Wolves at home on a Saturday and the crowd could be a bit quiet.
You really have to dig those games out. Players have to find that from within.
And Eddie Howe won’t rest on his laurels. He is experienced enough to know what the team needs, and they have the right kind of players too – Kieran Trippier stands out a real leader to me.
They might want to make one or two additions in January, but they’ve built their squad well too, they haven’t gone for the flashy signings and have brought in the right players to fit. They are coping pretty well with the challenge so far.
Sean Longstaff to Have 1+ shots on target
And the manager is getting more out of some of the players they’ve had their already.
Look at Sean Longstaff, he’s playing out of his skin at the moment and has scored a few goals. He’s worth including in your bet builder on this game for a shot on target at least.
For Arsenal, they lost in midweek and it’s disappointing to be out of the League Cup, obviously, but they would probably say that, nowadays, they’ve got bigger fish to fry.
A couple of years ago they’ve might’ve bitten your arm off for a Carabao Cup win, but now they’re challenging for the league title, so I doubt the fans will be overly disappointed.
Bukayo Saka to Have 1+ Shots on Target
And they’ve bene playing very well. They won 5-0 last weekend and I love watching Arsenal play at the moment, despite my Spurs sympathies.
Bukayo Saka is their biggest threat and would be my pick for a Shot on Target in this game.
Bruno Guimaraes to Commit 2+ Fouls
Newcastle are the kings of sh*thousery now and I can see this being a spicy encounter. Two sides near the top of the table, Saturday evening under the light, a fiery atmosphere at St James’ Park, there should be a few cards and challenges flying around.
Bruno Guimaraes in midfield for Newcastle will probably be involved in it and I can see him committing a couple of fouls at least.
Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich
Saturday, 5:30pm
TV: Sky Sports Football
Harry Kane’s in double figures already for Munich – and has 5 or 6 assists as well!
It’s unbelievable.
He couldn’t have wished for a better start.
But he’s been producing ridiculous number in the Premier League for a long time – we all knew he could do this.
Harry Kane to Score
He’s in the best side out there and he really elevates them into the Champions League conversation too – I don’t think they would be without him.
You’d have to expect him to score on Saturday too.
Both Teams to Score – Yes
I’ve seen both of these sides quite a bit this season for the Champions League on TNT, and we saw recently how Dortmund handled the trip to Newcastle. They were impressive, especially defensively, but they have a lot of threats going forward too.
You would expect goals in this game, especially as they are at home. Both Teams to Score looks a solid bet.
