Carabao Cup – Round 3
St James’ Park, Newcastle, Wednesday, 8:00pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event
This week the EFL Cup is back and the pick of the games has to be Wednesday’s Newcastle v Man City clash. The reigning treble winners have a great pedigree in this competition but Newcastle will be desperate to win and edge closer to winning their first silverware in years after coming so close in the same competition last season.
Man City to Win
Man City have won the EFL Cup in six of the last 10 seasons and it’s clear that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City view this as an important competition and treat it with the respect that it deserves. City are big odds to win, mostly because there’s always a chance that like most big clubs, they’ll rest a few players.
Resting two or three star players won’t matter to City though. They have top quality and world class players in every position and even with slight rotation I think they’ll have too much for Newcastle. We haven’t seen City heavily rotate in this competition before against big opposition and it’s unlikely to happens here.
Bruno Guimaraes to Commit 2 or More Fouls
We have to back Newcastle’s Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to commit a couple of fouls. The 25-year old has a really tough day ahead of him against a City midfield full of movement and great passing.
In six Premier League games this season he’s averaged 1.8 fouls per game and in a game against a team with the quality of Man City it’s almost certain he fouls on two or more occasions.

Kieran Trippier to Commit 1 or More Fouls
Kieran Trippier is one of Newcastle’s key men and provides them with real leadership as well as great set piece delivery. We’re more interested in his defensive work though, and we’re backing the England man to commit a foul in this game.
Through six EPL games he’s averaged one foul per match and now faces a tough evening with Jack Grealish his likely matchup. If Grealish doesn’t play, or gets subbed, then we’re likely to see Jeremy Doku.
Whichever of these two feature it shouldn’t really matter, they’re both foul magnets and Trippier is more than likely to bring either down at some point.
Sandro Tonali to Commit 1 or More Fouls in the First Half
So far this season Sandro Tonali has averaged one foul per game but in this match I’m backing him to commit a foul in the first half. When these two teams met back in August, Tonali did not fare well.
He struggled to keep up with the pace and movement of Man City, committing two fouls and picking up a booking before being taken off after an hour. We know that he struggled just over a month ago, so it’s fair to assume that he might again have trouble against a midfield with such quality and a forward line who have such dangerous movement in and around the box.
Julian Alvarez to Score
The final leg of the Bet Builder is for Julian Alvarez to score. Man City’s Argentinian forward already has four goals this season. He’s started every game in the league and in the Champions League and is now a key player for the club.
Alvarez gets in dangerous positions and if Guardiola does decide to rest Erling Haaland it’ll be the former River Plate man who’ll be playing down the middle. Alvarez got the goal when City beat Newcastle earlier in the season and I think he has a great chance to do the same again.
