The third round of the Carabao Cup is here and all those clubs who enjoy the pleasures of the Champions League, Europa League and the one they let West Ham win join the fray in the most prestigious sporting competition sponsored by fizzy pop since the Red Bull Flugtag spread its metaphorical wings.

And that means the defending champions totter onto the stage, trophy lid still hanging at a jaunty angle from Casemiro’s furrowed brow, sticky, Carabao-flavoured finger-prints all over to famous silver pot.

And the Brazilian midfielders forehead should be well wrinkled given the way his side has started the season.

United ground out a win on Saturday night away at Turf Moor though Burnley will be ruing several missed opportunities. It broke a streak of three defeats and they’ll hope to build on that momentum at home.

Manager Erik ten Hag is working with a depleted squad however. Across the defence the issues are particularly acute and, despite the clean sheet in their last game, it’s difficult to imagine them holding out a Palace side who have made a habit of scoring on their travels recently.

Chief among their scoring threats is former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, who has burst into a streak of scoring form like he was back playing Ross County and Motherwell. He’s scored five goals in six appearances this season having netted 13 times in the previous 68 games he’s played for the Eagles.

Those five strikes this season include three in four away games, so his form looks irresistible against a makeshift United defence at Old Trafford.

    Salford City v Burnley
    Tuesday, 7:45pm

Vanquished by Man United despite playing some very nice football, Vincent Kompany’s Burnley will get a chance to balance out the XG conundrum against League Two’s Salford City.

They languish in 21st place in the bottom tier of the Football League and while we might expect some squad rotation on the part of the Clarets, the expectation has to be that the gulf between both sides will be evident on the scoreboard as well as in the nice passing triangles.

Salford have claimed Leeds’ scalp this season on penalties, but, high on the thrill of upsetting the Championship side, they’ve lost all five of their games since and haven’t kept a clean sheet all season. Burnley 2-0 is not much to ask.

    Bradford v Middlesbrough
    Tuesday, 7:45pm

Boro were flying high last season under Michael Carrick but they’ve had a disastrous opening to this campaign. Striker Chuba Akpom being sold from under his nose in August to Ajax hasn’t helped.

They’ve only won three games all season, two of those in this competition, and the other coming on Saturday thanks to Southampton’s incredibly generous habit of turning over possession in their own half.

They’ve not kept a clean sheet all season and Bradford have scored in five of their last six, including four goals away at Newport at the weekend. They should get at least one against Boro.

    Ipswich v Wolves
    Tuesday, 7:45pm

Just five teams separate these two sides in the football league pyramid. The Tractor Boys are motoring in second spot in the Championship, with seven wins from eight games in their return to the second tier.

Wolves, meanwhile, have coped admirably with the turmoil they endured at the start of the season, but losses away at Palace and at home to Liverpool followed by a draw with Luton might make you think the preseason relegation predictions could still prove correct despite spirited efforts to open the campaign.

Ipswich have made a habit of scoring as well this season, and while Wolves haven’t been as toothless as many expected, the home team have a good shot at progressing here given their goal-getting exploits. Double Chance on Ipswich and Draw appeals.
