The three promoted sides from the Championship always know it’s going to be a struggle in the self-appointed greatest league in the world. Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United would certainly have been hoping for slightly better starts this season though.

The last of those three teams hosts Newcastle United at 4.30pm on Sunday. The Blades have taken just one point from their opening five matches, thanks to a 2-2 draw with Everton in their last home game.

There have been eight instances of a newly promoted club taking no more than two points from their first quintet of matches and they all went straight back down. An already tall order could be about to go stratospheric for Sheffield United.

Newcastle to Win

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom will have to hope that Newcastle’s midweek exertions in Milan leave them undercooked here. The Magpies’ success last season was founded upon being able to play the same 11 lads more or less every week, which is far trickier to do when having enormous Champions League matches to negotiate.

Nonetheless, Newcastle were very impressive in this sort of fixture last season, avoiding defeat home and away against the sides who finished eighth-or-lower, and winning five of their games on the road against the eventual bottom seven.

Sheffield United can at least point to a victory the last time they hosted the Geordie Nation. However, that was pre-Saudi takeover and manager Steve Bruce was probably distracted by bacon or other more pressing issues.

With Newcastle having had the most difficult start of any Premier League team this season, they will welcome a chance to play one of the strugglers. It should enable them to collect a routine three points.

Over 2.5 Goals

While they might have only put one point on the board, Sheffield United have at least given their supporters a goal to cheer in their last four league matches.

With five goals scored from 3.6 expected, they have been a little fortunate though. Newcastle’s back line has not looked as secure as it did last term but they will expect to blunt the Blades.

Whether they do or not, it’s fair to assume there will be a few goals. Where the Magpies were below Premier League average for matches featuring at least three goals last season, they were above when only looking at away games.

Over 2.5 goals paid out in all their games on the road against the bottom five in 2022/23 so it’s logical to expect more of the same on Sunday.

Callum Wilson First Goalscorer

Callum Wilson started on the bench for the Champions League opener so should get to start at Bramall Lane. Wilson scored eight away goals in the Premier League last season, a tally only four players topped.

Like all good forwards, he filled his boots against the poorer sides, bagging braces on the road against West Ham, Everton and Leeds while also scoring two when Southampton visited St James’ Park.

In short, Wilson is Howe’s go-to man for sticking it to the little guys. He should be able to open the scoring here.

Over 10.5 Corners

Newcastle’s matches saw more corners than those of any other club in the Premier League last season, yet in 2023/24 they are fourth bottom of these standings.

Their tally should rise as soon as they face one of the poorer sides, starting here. Only one of the Magpies’ away matches against an eventual bottom half team didn’t hit double figures for corners last term so that suggests there should be plenty here.

The Blades’ had the joint-fourth most matches with over 11.5 corners in the Championship last term and were joint-second in the early weeks of this campaign. Over 10.5 corners looks a solid selection.

Over 3.5 Cards

Never mind that the Premier League has gone card crazy this season – there were 12 in Tottenham’s win over the Blades last weekend – Newcastle have taken it to extremes. Three of their matches have seen eight, with six and four in the other fixtures giving them a ridiculous average of 6.8 per game.

That’s heading up towards double the league average of 3.6 they posted in 2022/23. With Sheffield United’s figures for last season and this being 4.1 and 5.0 respectively, there should be over 3.5 cards comfortably enough.
