Arsenal v PSV Eindhoven Champions League The Emirates, Wednesday, 8pm TNT Sports 1
Arsenal to Win
Arsenal have not been convincing in any of their five league games this season and yet Mikel Arteta’s side have picked up 13 points out of a possible 15. That is a hallmark of a good side and Arsenal will surely be a force to be reckoned with once they really get going.
They face a potential banana skin in their Champions League group stage opener against PSV. The Dutch side are top of the Eredivisie with a flawless record of four wins from four games, winning by an average of three goals. PSV also dismantled Rangers in the Champions League play-offs, hammering the Scottish side 5-1 in the second-leg in a scoreline that flattered Rangers.
The sides met in the Europa League group stages last season with the Gunners narrowly winning at home thanks to Granit Xhaka’s strike. PSV won the return fixture 2-0, indicating that this will be no cake walk. They should just about get over the line though.
Both Teams to Score
PSV scored five in their win over Rangers and have scored an impressive 13 goals in four league games so far this season. They have obviously not played a team on Arsenal’s level yet, but they will cause significant problems for a defence that has looked shaky at home this season.
Arsenal are without a clean sheet at the Emirates in three league games this season, conceding sloppy goals against Nottingham Forest and Fulham and conceding against a shambolic Manchester United team who scored from their first attack. They only avoided conceding twice against United – and losing the game – thanks to the narrowest of offside calls.
They have been grinding out results, but have been doing so because their defence has been unable to keep opponents at bay at the Emirates.
Martin Odegaard to Have Two or More Shots on Target
Martin Odegaard has been crucial in Arsenal’s opening five games, scoring the winner against Crystal Palace and equalising against Manchester United.
The Norwegian midfielder will be crucial to Arsenal’s Champions League hopes and is good value to find the target on at least two occasions.
Odegaard has by far the highest shots per game average of any Arsenal player so far this season, averaging 3.2 shots per appearance.
He is the only Arsenal player to average more than three shots per game, with Bukayo Saka in second place on a 2.4 average.
Despite their relatively sluggish start, Arsenal have recorded at least 13 shots in each of their five games so far this season and will likely reach that tally on Wednesday night.
It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Odegaard match his season average of three shots per game and by extension it wouldn’t be massively surprising if two of those efforts were on target.
No Premier League team has won more corners than Arsenal this season. The Gunners have won 47 corners in five games, an average of almost 10 per game.
Considering this is their first appearance in the Champions League in six years, they will want to put on a show for their fans and will surely pin PSV back at stages.
Arteta’s side will put their Dutch opponents under significant pressure in their bid to claim a first success in the competition since a win over Basel in December 2016.
PSV, meanwhile, have won 53 corners in their last eight games, including their games against Rangers and a Champions League qualifier against Sturm Graz. They are an attacking side and will surely win a few corners of their own.
Bukayo Saka to Commit or More Fouls
Bukayo Saka is one of Arsenal’s most lethal attacking players, but he is also one of their most persistent foulers.
The English winger has two goals and two assists in his opening five league appearances, but he has also committed an average of 1.2 fouls per game.
Only Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber have committed more fouls per game than Saka and considering Timber has only played half a game, his average can hardly be considered.
Saka is also one of six Arsenal players to receive a yellow card this season and there is a good chance that he will commit a foul.
