Europa League, Group E

I know a lot of people have a pop at Liverpool because they’re not in the Champions League.
But remember, for the longest time, they used to boast about winning ‘the treble’ which featured the old UEFA Cup for some reason, as well as the FA Cup and the League Cup.
They might have won the Champions League multiple times since then, but the Man United fan in your life will never let you forget that only two years on from them winning the actual treble, Liverpool tried to counteract with that.
So, in a way, you could suggest this is a bit of homecoming more than anything else, and I’m sure they’re delighted to be back.
Liverpool to Win
It’s not just me suggesting that we should automatically expect English teams to go to the continent and win comfortably – as you’ll see from the other legs, I don’t think that at all.
But I do think Liverpool are one of the rare sides in Europe that don’t see a notable dropoff when they rotate their forward players because of the sheer depth they’ve accumulated, particularly off the back of panicking when Sadio Mane left.
Under 3.5 Goals
To be fair, these games are rarely not tight-knit. In this instance, I think going on the road to a club who have a hardcore support will make them feel slightly claustrophobic.
The last time Liverpool were in this competition, they faced off against Bordeaux, Sion and Rubin Kazan. While that was at the very beginning of the Klopp era, the Europa League does have a disarming effect.
Those games away from home in that group produced a grand total of three goals combined. Liverpool have progressed since, of course – but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a gung-ho shot across Europe.

Both Teams to Score
Liverpool’s only clean sheet this season came against Aston Villa. Even in pre-season they looked incredibly leaky.
That shutout against Villa was also a byproduct of them scoring early on and being able to manage the game out.
I don’t see them getting that opportunity here, particularly as Klopp is likely to draft in a younger unit.
Luis Diaz to Score Anytime
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ben Doak get a run-out here, with perhaps a half from Darwin Nunez thrown in to compensate. But someone I do think gets ninety minutes in the final third is Luiz Diaz, who, if you take the splits, is the high-percentage chance of finding the net here.
Half Time Draw
The Reds have only led in two of their five games so far this season, despite winning four of them. It’s become a theme that they get better as games go on. Maybe that’s an energy conservation thing to combat last year’s shortcomings or maybe it’s a subconscious thing – but either way, it is the trend.
Don’t expect this game to get out of hand.
