Watching Manchester City enter a Champions League season as defending champions will really irritate so many people.
And it’s primarily because of this that I will issue them my heartiest congratulations. As your well-supported cross-city rivals try to figure out just how to reset, the only real question that City have to contend with is if a repeat of a treble win is enough now?
Triggered? Excellent.
In all seriousness, playing Red Star Belgrade at home isn’t the primary reason you need to stay in on a Tuesday evening – but it’s a lovely excuse to get out of watching another episode of that nonsensical series you’ve been forced to watch for the last six weeks with no end in sight.
And that alone is worth your attention.
Champions League: Man City v Red Star Tuesday, 8pm TV: TNT Sports 2
Half-Time Result – Man City
Well there’s no point backing them to win outright, is there?
The biggest issue I find here for teams is that they know full-well that they can’t sit in. Red Star Belgrade have two options here – either lose 5-0 by sitting back, or losing 7-2 and giving their lunatic supporters groups at least a couple of moments worth of twirling their uniformal t-shirts in the Manchester sky.
Some teams are just wound-up to eleven psychologically and that’s very much the case here. Given that level of commitment will force City to engage early on, it should see them net in the opening half.
City at home are a bit manic. They hit Copenhagen for five before scoring three against Sevilla, and then seven against Leipzig; before rounding it off with three and four-goal home salvos at home to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
They do not understand the mantra of only winning by as many as you need to, so always take the over with them in this competition.
Both Teams to Score – Yes
And again, because of the fact that City will be so comfortable and ultimately weed in younger players when the result is in-hand, this gives you a fine example of when an experienced team will force their embarrassed will on a group of naïve academy players.
Even if you just consider set pieces where Aleksandar Dragovic will go head-first into a group of players to move the ball an inch closer to the goal, it’s worth having that leg on-side.
Phil Foden to Score Anytime
Obviously taken off with this in mind against West Ham, Foden is really the only attacking player at City you can be confident of starting against Red Star – and that alone means he’s worthy of same. Foden might be debating his best position, but being in the right place at the right time is undeniably his best attribute.
Red Star to Commit Twelve or More Fouls
If you looked over your shoulder to see a man who’s just nutmegged you, weaving left and right over a football because he disrespects the people you spend your entire week with – you’d probably kick him as well, wouldn’t you?
