Arsenal To Win

The head-to-head relationship between Everton and Arsenal is one-sided in a couple of ways, neither of which you might expect. Firstly, it greatly favours the home side. Whichever club has been in front of its own fans has won the last four Premier League meetings and has only lost two of the last 14.

Weirder still is that the last away win belongs to Everton, in April 2021, meaning they have won four of the last six clashes and have four victories and a draw from the last five at Goodison Park.

Yet in the period that this record covers, from 2018/19 onward, Arsenal have amassed the third most Premier League points while Everton are down in 12th. Since the start of last season, they are second and 17 th respectively so surely this match has to end in a rare away success in this fixture?

We’d have thought that in years past, of course. It really is hard to look past an Arsenal victory though. Mikel Arteta’s boys had the best away record in the Premier League last season – yep, even better than Manchester City – and won at Selhurst Park in their only trip to date in 2023/24.

Add in that Everton have been beaten by Fulham and Wolves at Goodison this term, while also losing three of their final four last season and the picture for the home crowd is not looking positive. The Blues’ have reasons to be mildly optimistic – more on that shortly – but it’s impossible to look past three points for the visitors.

Both Teams to Score

If you thought Everton’s record against Arsenal was weird, did you know only one team in the top flight has had more Opta-defined big chances than Sean Dyche’s crew this season? The problem has been that thy have missed more than the Gunners have had in total.

Having squandered four in their home loss to Fulham, they went one better or worse depending on your perspective with five wasted when beaten at Goodison by Wolves. If they can cash in those chips here, Everton might even win. But, assuming that’s too big a stretch, it’s reasonable to think they can score against an Arsenal side with only one clean sheet from four matches this term. I’ll take Both Teams To Score.

Bukayo Saka to Score Anytime

When Arsenal beat Everton 4-0 in March, Gabriel Martinelli bagged a brace while Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka picked up a goal apiece. Any one of that trio could easily hammer the Toffees here too.

The latter pair have been the Gunners’ top players for shots so far this season, with 14 and 12 respectively. However, only five of Odegaard’s have been in the box whereas Saka’s total of 10 is the eighth most in the Premier League heading into the weekend.

Add in that the England winger will likely be directly up against 67-year-old Ashley Young and he should be able to have some fun and score at some point.

Over 11.5 Corners

These sides had contrasting records for the number of corners in their matches last season, with Everton third top and Arsenal joint-second bottom in the division. Both have seen an uptick in 2023/24, the latter especially. The Gunners are also the only team in the Premier League to win the corner battle in every game so far this term, with the Toffees only having failed to do so in their Villa Park mauling.

Over 5.5 Away Corners

The last eight meetings have averaged 9.2 corners, the previous four at Goodison 8.5, so aiming low might make sense. However, with Arsenal having at least eight in every match this season they should be good for Over 5.5 Away Corners and as Everton have averaged a shade over seven, a match total of Over 11.5 appears reasonable.

Over 3.5 Cards

These sides have also seen their card numbers rise, though as all Premier League games are averaging an extra 0.9 compared with last season, that has generally occurred across the board. That hasn’t been the case for match referee Simon Hooper, though, who is one of the most booking-averse whistlers in the Premier League.

He may have to be a bit more familiar with his cards in this one. Six of the previous eight clashes of these teams saw at least four, as has every Arsenal game this season. Over 3.5 Cards looks, um, on the cards.
