Serbia v Hungary

Hungary +1 handicap

First we’re off to Belgrade where Serbia host Hungary and we might be the only ones there. Serbia have been ordered to play behind closed doors due to crowd trouble in their away win over Montenegro in March.

Not having roaring support to cheer you on could have an impact on proceedings in this top-of-the-group clash. Usually an intimidating place to go to, Serbia won’t have their ‘12th man’ in the stands now.

This makes me lean towards Hungary getting a result. Both are separated by just a single goal after three games with each notching up seven points.

I’m expecting a low-scoring affair which at the prices gives me some value at the double chance market for Hungary, who are yet to concede in qualifying so far.

Hungary have had wins over England and Germany away from home in the past year so it’ll be no surprise to see them get a result.

Slovenia v Northern Ireland

Slovenia to win
Benjamin Sesko to score

From Belgrade we’ll now make the 530km trip west and take a pit stop in the beautiful city of Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Slovenia host Northern Ireland on match day 5, and know that a win is crucial to keep their qualification hopes alive in what’s been a very competitive group so far.

I’ll be backing Slovenia to get the win. Northern Ireland have lost their last three games 1-0 in the group and are struggling for goals. They’ve a team of mainly Championship players who’ve lost 7 of their last 11 matches and are bang out of form.

Their centre-back partnership could well be Paddy McNair & Jonny Evans who’ll struggle against the quality Slovenia possess up front, especially in RB Leipzigs new signing, Benjamin Sesko.

The 20-year-old scored his first two Bundesliga goals at the weekend, coming off the bench in a 3-0 win over Union Berlin with a curling effort and powerful header, showcasing why Leipzig spent €25 million to prize him away from RB Salzburg in the summer.

Coming into this tie in form, I’m backing him to get on the scoresheet in a Slovenia win.

France v Republic of Ireland

France to win
Both teams to score – No

We continue west now, very west with a 1,250km non-stop route from Ljubljana to Paris, where the World Cup runners up France, play host to the Republic of Ireland in the Parc des Princes.

With their usual home of the Stade-de-France being primed for the Rugby World Cup start on Friday night (READ THAT PREVIEW HERE), the French national team go to PSG and Kylian Mbappe’s home ground of the Parc des Princes to take on Ireland.

Unfortunately, I’m compounding my lack of patriotism by again predicting that an Irish team will fall to defeat on the continent.

Evan Ferguson, the greatest player to ever grace a football pitch has been ruled out of this tie, which has me thinking ‘why bother?’

Ireland are up against it and bar the odd set piece, will likely offer little threat going forward and will try to keep the scoreline down to the bare minimum.

Ireland are good at doing that – the last seven defeats on the road have been by the single goal. Always a spirited defeat with us huh.?

That’s why I’m not going to touch the handicaps and instead going to go with France to win and both teams to score ‘no’ to round up our Thursday night multi match bet-builder!
