Let’s bid a welcome return to Gareth Southgate’s England, where it doesn’t matter if you actually play football very often at club level or abandon your principles to chase the riches on offer in Saudi Arabian football. We’ve got a game to play which in the grand scheme of things doesn’t matter in the slightest and we’re not going to let small issues like those bother us.

Don’t get me wrong, Ukraine against England is of vital importance to the hosts. They are second in the Group C standings – when the top two sides qualify for the finals next summer – and after this they will have finished with the runaway leaders and can focus on seeing off Italy (whom they face in Milan on Tuesday).

But for England, the job is complete after just four of their eight matches. The Three Lions are 1/6 to win the group, 1/100 to qualify. They could field you, me and Harry Maguire out there on Saturday afternoon and England will still be in Germany at Euro 2024.

England -1

On the assumption that Southgate does his job (for which he’s paid over 12 times as much as Sarina Wiegman despite not winning anything) by selecting a sensible starting XI, England should win this match easily enough.

The teams met in qualifying back in March and the favourites won 2-0. They also clashed at the quarter-final stage of Euro 2020, with England winning 4-0 on that occasion.
Neither outcome flattered the Three Lions either. Combine the stats from the two matches and they led 28-10 on shots, 14-2 for attempts on target and 8-0 for Opta-defined clear-cut chances.

They might not win by four goals as they did in Rome two years ago but England should do enough to overcome the handicap and triumph by a two goal margin.

Both Teams to Score, No

As the aforementioned stats imply, Ukraine barely threatened England at all in their recent meetings. Looking back further tells a similar story, with the underdogs only scoring once in the last five clashes between the teams.

That occurred at Wembley in 2012, when Yevhen Konoplyanka curled a brilliant shot from 25-yards out and into the top corner. Without that individual brilliance, though, Ukraine would be goalless in their last 511 minutes against England.

Add in that they only beat Malta 1-0 last time out and it’s fair to expect them to draw a blank here, making ‘no’ the way to go in the Both Teams to Score market.

Harry Kane to score 2 or more goals

The entire England set up is geared towards Harry Kane getting on the score sheet. The Bayern Munich new boy opened the scoring in the last two matches between these teams, collecting three goals in total.

Even more remarkable is that none of those strikes was from the spot. If only his penalties counted, Kane would still be England’s joint-22nd top scorer, with no active player topping his goal total for the Three Lions.

As it is, he is their top scorer with 58 and on a run of scoring in six consecutive internationals. To pick him to score is too easy so lets up the ante with a brace.

Kane has scored two-or-more on 10 occasions for England and can do so again, particularly as Ukraine have given up a couple of penalties lately. He’ll lap up their rash defending.

Under 9.5 corners

When it comes to corners in England games aim low. Not the takers – we’ve got to make some positive use of Slabhead – but the bettors.

Just two of their last 13 matches have hit double figures for corners, with those games seeing just 7.2 on average.

There were five and eight in Southgate’s clashes with Ukraine, so there being under 9.5 here seems likely.

Over 3.5 cards

Those two previous matches saw a solitary yellow card in total too. That’s obviously below par – England’s last 20 games have averaged 2.9 yellows – and there have tended to be more bookings when the Three Lions have roamed overseas.

England’s last 10 away matches have averaged 4.5 yellow cards, and more than four on six occasions. With match referee Georgi Kabakov averaging 3.7 in his international qualification games, it would be a surprise if there were not over 3.5 cards in this clash.
