Luton v West Ham

Kenilworth Road, 9pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Premier League

I’m not sure if you’ve heard but the entrance to Luton’s Kenilworth Road ground is quite unusual. You have to go through a wardrobe in your spare room. But don’t worry, Mr Tumnus will be there to greet you. And with Gollum in the opposition dugout, fantasy fiction fans will be well served when the Hatters welcome West Ham United for their first ever home game in the Premier League on Friday night.

Except, of course, that Luton have been in the top flight before, it just happened to occur prior to the invention of football by Sky TV in 1992. Indeed, in the fateful final season before the birth of the Premier League, both of these clubs were relegated from the old Division One.

It’s just taken the Hatters a lot longer to claw their way back, and by a much more circuitous route, that’s all.

West Ham to Win

And so what if the teams haven’t met for 29 years, the home side are unbeaten in the last four clashes. The last game between these sides saw Scott Oakes score a hat-trick to carry Luton to an FA Cup semi-final. Great memories for Hatters fans, no doubt, but not much use to us. Far more pertinent here is the fact that Luton have conceded seven goals in their two games so far in 2023/24 with only a penalty to show for their efforts in the other direction.

In fairness to Rob Edwards’ side, plenty of bigger and richer clubs will struggle at Brighton and Chelsea this season.
But West Ham have started the season well, with seven points from three matches, and a victory would take them top of the table for the first time (this far into a campaign) since 1983.

With the Hammers having scored in all but two of their last 13 league games and Luton defensively frail, the Hammers can win to continue their unstoppable march towards the league title (ahem).

Both Teams to Score

Not that David Moyes’ boys have been solid at the back, though, with them having conceded at least one goal in their previous six league matches and nine of the last 10. They also had a poor record in this regard against struggling teams last season. West Ham didn’t keep any clean sheets against the eventual bottom five in 2022/23 and only one against their nine fellow bottom half sides.

While this is a step up for Luton, they only failed to score in five of their 23 Championship matches at Kenilworth Road last term. The fans will be expecting a decent performance and something to cheer about and the form book suggests that both teams will score, even if the points head back to east London.

Jarrod Bowen to Score

It’s 92 years since a West Ham player scored in their first three away games of a top flight season, yet Jarrod Bowen could be the man to end this niche barren run. As he hadn’t scored a league goal on the road since February 2022 (and only two in all competitions since then), Bowen is clearly enjoying a hot spell with his goals at Bournemouth and Brighton.

But a look at the stats shows why he is the Hammers’ best bet to score. Bowen has had 11 shots in the league this season, when no other player in the squad has had more than six, and he has fired off five of West Ham’s 14 shots on target. Take advantage of Bowen’s form with an anytime goal scorer bet, before he returns to only finding the net at the London Stadium.

Over 10.5 Corners

Teams which frequently cross the ball often have plenty of corners in their matches, and these sides are no exception.
There were over 10.5 corners in 12 of West Ham’s 19 away games last season, which was the joint-most in the Premier League for matches on the road. Similarly, Luton topped the Championship for home games which met these criteria, with 11-or-more corners occurring 16 times.

In short, bet on over 10.5 corners, yeah?

Over 3.5 Cards

The card situation initially appears less straight forward, with West Ham’s matches averaging the fewest in the top flight last season.
But bookings have gone through the roof in 2023/24. Both of the Hammers’ away games have seen at least four cards when only five of 19 on the road did last term.

The same is true for both of Luton’s Premier League games, and with referee Paul Tierney being above average for flashing yellow, we should be safe for over 3.5 cards in this one.
