Leeds to Win Over 3.5 Goals Callum Hendry to Have One or More Shots on Target Callum Hendry to Commit Two or More Fouls Conor McAleny to Commit Two or More Fouls
I think a lot of my disenfranchisement with modern football is the fact people like to dress up rivalries based on success. Rivalries should not be about success – they should be about geographical proximity, or a long-standing cultural difference. Or, in very rare instances, previous incidents.
Leeds and Manchester is one of those rivalries that transcends football. It goes back as far as the War of the Roses. And in modern times, it’s been flashed by the likes of Eric Cantona, and ehh.. Jermaine Beckford. It’s one of the last pure dislikes in English football and I really feel it needs controlled energy to thrive.
So intense is this rivalry, that a new dynamic involving the fabled Class of 92 and Leeds United should see a few creative chants on the terraces, as well as a genuinely bitter affair despite its lowly billing.
Just another reason why footballing heritage matters. Because what else would you be doing on a Tuesday evening?
There’s too big of a difference between the teams for a shock to occur. Two things will likely happen in this instance.
The first is that Leeds will be briefed on how big a failure this would be if they were to drop out against a David Beckham-led unit. The second thing is that Salford will probably have wheeled out Nicky Butt to explain how big a game it is, undermining the credibility of it for them.
Fear is a bigger motivator than opportunity.
Over 3.5 Goals
These two clubs are basket cases.
That’s probably not news if you’ve seen Leeds play football at any point over the last five years, but Salford themselves are a bit of a maverick squad as well.
There have been multiple goals in each of their games thus far, with both teams scoring in both of their home ties, as well as a 4-3 stomper against Tranmere.
Oh, a Liverpool-based club bringing drama against a Manchester-situation team.
It’s almost like narrative drives this PowerPoint project.
Callum Hendry to Have One or More Shots on Target
Callum Hendry is not going to set your pulses racing with the way he goes about the game, but he almost always ends up involved in the key moments for this team.
He’s absolutely tiny so he’ll really struggle against some of these Premier League-ready defenders, but ultimately given how open Leeds are, he’ll have a handful of efforts throughout the game.
Callum Hendry to Commit Two or More Fouls
I’d also argue that he’ll be asked to do too much early on in terms of pressing because Neil Wood will want to put down a marker that they’re not going to just let them play out.
Small man syndrome or whatever you want to call it, but only one man on this team sheet will have committed more fouls than the centre forward this year.
Conor McAleny to Commit Two or More Fouls
…and that’s Conor McAleny.
The theme is clear in that both of these primary fall guys are in forward areas because you generally get away with more as a striker or advanced midfielder in this case.
But I cannot tell you how irritated I’d be if I were a number ten and Leeds were playing around me all evening.
