While we’re all preoccupied with our own clubs’ early season fortunes – some containing considerably more success than others – there’s huge games going on around Europe this week.
Given that I’m a Birmingham City fan and part of this piece will be about Aston Villa’s continental adventures, you can absolutely guarantee I’d only be writing it if I was convinced of a winner. You see, I spend an awful lot of my time pondering football clubs in different nations because I like to plan my holidays around them.
And I actually find that there are levels of funding gone into various leagues that totally skip the headlines because of where they are, and it’s not Todd Boehly rolling in a bathtub of ten-bob notes, hoping that one of them can buy a player capable of kicking a football. Ironically, in order to make a few quid, all you have to do is follow the money.
5.45pm: Hibs v Aston Villa
Villa to Win
Ugh – they’ve probably a top eight side in the Premier League now. And as we all know, Edinburgh might be a nice place to go because of the castle and Mary’s Milk Bar, but ultimately, Easter Road should produce little resistance to Unai Emery. Historically, European football has been his modus operandi, so don’t expect him to rest players either. Expect Villa to Win.
Over 2.5 Goals
Which leads me to telling you that Over 2.5 Goals here will be done and dusted by the hour mark. Hibs have shipped five goals in their first two Scottish Premiership outings this year – three to St. Mirren and two to Motherwell. Do we even mention them scraping past ten-man Raith Rovers in the League Cup? Eeek.
8pm: Maccabi Haifa v Young Boys
Maccabi Haifa to Win
This may not come as a massive surprise you folks, but home advantage is now a thing again because the fear of conceding an away goal doesn’t matter anymore. Some of the strongest, most volatile places in football have been neutralised by the fear of progressing through a tie – not conceding at home being one of the key cogs to that success. Now, coming to Israel returns to being a nightmare for teams.
Outside of fending off interest in Fabian Rieder, Young Boys haven’t done a tonne. But while retaining Cedric Itten and Jean-Pierre Nsame is obviously a big plus (much like the Swiss flag), Haifa managed to bring in Frantzdy Pierrot to replace Omer Atzili – quite possibly an upgrade. Those factors combined make me want to side with the hosts so it’s Maccabi Haifa to Win.
8pm: Molde v Galatasaray
Galatasaray to Win
My bet for the Champions League will be the Turkish outfit to get out of the groups. This squad is outrageous from top to bottom. You don’t see many teams go from 13th to dominant winners of a league title the year after, but that’s what the Istanbul giants managed in 2023.
Mauro Icardi’s emergence as the best striker in Turkey ensured a constant flow of goals in tight games, and they’ve since made that transfer permanent. A loan signing for this year that should elevate them among Europe’s second tier of clubs will be Hakim Ziyech. Let alone Wilfried Zaha, Tete and Kerem Demirbay. Let’s have Galatasaray to Win.
Greek football is on its arse, make no mistake. Simon Banza attracted interest from the Premier League after netting eleven times in his appearances last year, but they’ve managed to keep him on their books. Meanwhile, Panathinaikos have been bin-dipping for defensive reinforcements after scraping past AEK and Olympiacos last week.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before – an aging Brazilian holding midfielder, a former promising American youth in Man City’s structure and a Dutch winger whose career saw him end up in the bottom half of Serie A. Check. We’ll round off with Braga to Win.
