Hibernian v Aston Villa
Europa Conference League
Easter Road
TV: BBC Scotland, BBC iPlayer 17:45pm

When Aston Villa appointed Unai Emery in October of last year, the club had won two of their previous 11 league games, were sitting in 16th and were right among the relegation candidates.
At the time even the most optimistic of Villa fans wouldn’t have foreseen the Spaniard guiding the Villans to their highest league finish since 2011, and on the brink of group stages of European football for the first time since 2008.

Emery is a master of European competitions, winning the Europa League three times with Sevilla, once with Villareal and reaching the final with Arsenal.

This is why the Villa hierarchy brought him in, to lead Villa back to glory nights in Europe and while Conference League qualification mightn’t have been the aim for Emery when he was appointed, he has delivered in his first season and will take this competition seriously.

Standing in their way in a place at the group stages are Hibernian, who haven’t had the best of starts domestically with two defeats from two, but as with any Scotland vs England battle – the form book goes out the window.

I’ve combed through the stats and trends so you don’t have to, to come up with a 9/1 bet-builder for this evenings first leg.

Aston Villa – 1
Okay I may have said that the form book goes out the window in a Scotland v England battle – but I lied. Yes Aston Villa were thumped on their opening day at Newcastle but the rectified that immediately beating Everton comfortably at the weekend.

The Hibees however have lost both league games they’ve played, conceding five goals against St.Mirren and Motherwell in the process. They’ve played four European ties already and whilst getting through, they’ve conceded in each leg and even lost to an Andorran side – Inter Escaldes in a first leg. Aston Villa are a big step up in opposition they’ve already struggled against this season and should take a comfortable lead back to Villa Park.

Over 3.5 goals
Hibs haven’t kept a clean sheet in their seven games this season and there’s been an average of over four goals scored in those games. Villa have lost by four and won by four goals in their opening two games. There’s not much to suggest this will be a cagey low scoring affair, both sides are capable of scoring and I can see Villa scoring a handful.

Ollie Watkins to score
If we have Aston Villa scoring a handful of goals, we’ve got to have their main striker on the scoresheet. He’s yet to open his account for this season but will be targeting this game as the perfect opportunity to get up and running in his first ever European fixture.

Hibernian over 2.5 cards
Hibs have picked up 10 yellow cards in their four European games so far this season. They’re likely to be on the back foot here for most if not all the game and will be looking to frustrate Villa as much as they can. With an added impetus to punish time wasting and gamesmanship from referees this season, expect cards to be brandished at Easter Road.

Aston Villa over 4.5 corners
Villa to take at least five corners wraps up our bet-builder. We’re not shooting for the stars with this selection, it should land comfortably as our shortest leg in the bet-builder.

Villa will be utilising their tricky wide players Moussa Diaby & Leon Bailey with overlapping full backs providing support. Expect lots of crosses and shots on target which can be deflected behind for corners. We need the Villans to take five or more for this to land.
