Sunday 12pm: Norwich v Millwall EFL Championship match at Carrow Road TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football
Norwich to Win
It’s early days in the 2023/24 Championship season but it feels like things might have already regressed to the norm. Well, that norm being every other season prior to the last.
Why? Well, Norwich look to be pretty decent and Millwall could be poised for a midtableish finish. The Canaries were the archetypical yo-yo club, storming the second tier only to be relegated by Easter the following season. However, they were bang average last term and finished 13th.
The Lions from south London are a well established Championship club now and they flirted outrageously with a playoff push last year, finishing 8th and missing out by one point courtesy of a final-day defeat. That’s the closest they’ve got and they’ll be hoping it’s not the summit of their achievements.
But they’ve had a middling start to the season with a win and a loss in the league as well as a 4-0 Carabao Cup hammering at the hands of League One basket case Reading. Norwich are back, baby. That’s if their 2-1 win over Hull and thrilling 4-4 draw with Southampton are anything to go by. They also beat QPR away in the League Cup and with home advantage, and that small selection of good form to go on, I’m siding with Norwich to Win here.
Over 2.5 Goals
Buckle up goal fans because we could be in for a bit of a barn burner here. I should also probably mention at this point that this could be a drab 1-0. That’s because of the contrasting way these two have attacked the season so far.
The Canaries have witnessed a truly sensational 12 goals in their three games so far, with eight coming down at St Mary’s. Millwall, on the other hand, have had just two goals in their two league matches (one scored and one conceded) and have witnessed six goals in three games with that 4-0 shellacking at Reading sending their average sky rocketing.
We’ll back Norwich to have things their own way here and for there to be a little bit of excitement on offer on Sunday afternoon. Just don’t expect Millwall to be providing any of it. I’ll take a swing on Over 2.5 Goals.
With that snarky verdict ringing in the ears of Millwall boss Gary Rowett we’ll confidently turn our attention towards the hosts’ roster for some attack-minded punts and we’ll start with Josh Sargent.
The American forward will be remembered with some mirth by Premier League fans who lived through Norwich’s most recent relegation season in 2021/22. But he’s really starting to come of age and he bagged 13 goals last semester.
He’s already off the mark in 2023/24 and is ticking along at exactly one shot on target per 90 minutes played. As such, Josh Sargent To Have 1 Or More Shots On Target should be a smart play.
Gabriel Sara to Score or Assist
While Sargent continues to develop, Norwich might have found a gem in the Brazilian attacking midfielder Gabriel Sara. Signed from Sao Paulo for £6m last summer, he was okay in his debut campaign but has hit the ground running this time around.
He’s already notched a goal and an assist in his two appearances this season, also creating 13 chances for his team mates with 3 of those being considered as clear-cut in just 161 minutes of Championship action. He’s a double threat and I love the price on Gabriel Sara to Score or Assist.
Murray Wallace to Commit 1 Or More Fouls
We’ll round off by finally putting a big of respect on Millwall’s defensive prowess, or rather Murray Wallace’s tenacity. The long-serving Scot is always key to the Lions’ defensive performances and he’s been getting stuck in in typical fashion this season.
He’s committed four fouls over his two Championship outings so far and even I can work our that’s an average of two per match. We’re going for Murray Wallace to Commit 1 Or More Fouls but I wouldn’t put anyone of back 2, especially if this plays out how I expect it to.
