Spain v England
Women’s World Cup Final
Stadium Australia, Sydney
TV: BBC One, ITV, 11am

So, here it is. The biggest moment in Irish sporting history – the collective will of the entire nation, urging Spain to spare us the media coverage of England winning a major tournament. They’ll be on the roundabouts in Walkinstown if Aoibhe na Varro and her ehh.. Irish roots.. bring it home for us.

But away from our minnow-ism and sarcastic nature, I really hope that Spain batter this lot.

Not so much that I have skin in the game but I do think it would be an amazing achievement for a squad that’s been decimated by opt-outs due to ongoing issues with the RFEF to bring it home in spite of them.

There’d be no surer path for the Spanish women’s national team to the required respect and standards they deserve than showing they can achieve as a unit, even at an undesirable juncture.

So, the biggest women’s football match of our lifetime. Let’s just hope for the spectacle we know it can be. For a final time at this tournament, I wish you luck folks. Vamos!

Spain to Win

England are used to dominating possession. Keira Walsh could turn in a phone box, and their entire build-up is about players gambling with runs off the ball because they don’t need to be disciplined defensively.

To bring you through their showing so far – England have averaged 72% possession in the group stages, topping out at a 74.8% possession rate against Haiti. They broke 60% against Colombia, and then had a considerable lion’s share against both Australia and Nigeria.

How do the Lionesses react to not having the ball? Badly. Spain have extra quality.

Over 2.5 Goals

The one thing these two teams really are is ambitious. Spain have taken 145 shots in this tournament. No other team has even broken the century mark which is bonkers.

England, meanwhile, have converted one in every six of the shots they’ve taken. I’d be a madman to suggest anything other than Overs here.

Ella Toone To Commit 2 or More Fouls

The instruction from England manager Sarina Wiegman will be to have her chase, side-on, centre halves when they take too long on the ball.

Ella Toone leaves a lot in when she challenges a centre half, and I’d guess she’ll be pummeling into Spain early on to ensure she doesn’t get booked. This leg should land by half-time and you’ll be sitting cosy.

Jenni Hermoso To Have 1 or More Shots on Target

Jenni Hermoso has taken 19 shots at this tournament – an average of a shot every 29 minutes. She generally has to because it gets very crowded for Spain in the final third, because opposition defenders want to get touch tight. Their reliance on her as a central point of contact is massive, and it generally translates into her firing off shots at will.

Alexia Putellas to Have 1 or More Shots on Target

I’ll set the scene; it’s early doors and England are sitting in two banks of five. Hermoso has lost the ball five times because she has two centre halves and two midfielders kicking the ankles off of her. The heads begin to turn, and face the Ballon d’Or winner.

Alexia Putellas gets the ball – thirty-five yards from goal. The crowd urges her to shoot, and in a moment of presumed glory – she does. And it rolls along the surface into Mary Earps’ arms.
