Nottingham Forest v Sheffield Utd
English Premier League
The City Ground, Friday, 19:45

Nottingham Forest to win

Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United both suffered opening day defeats, but Forest’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal was far less concerning than Sheffield United’s home defeat against Crystal Palace.

Forest relied on home form to keep them up last season and simply have to win on Friday night to get their season up and running, especially considering they face Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City in their opening six games.

Steve Cooper’s side need three points on the board before that horrible run of fixtures and they should get them against a Sheffield United side that already seems destined for the drop.

Forest last played Sheffield United in a memorable play-off semi-final at the end of the 2021/22 season, so there should be a bit of bite to Friday’s encounter.

Forest should have too much for their newly promoted opponents if they can continue their excellent home form from the end of last season.

Taiwo Awoniyi to score anytime

Awoniyi was central to Forest’s survival last season, scoring six goals in their last four league games and being directly responsible for seven points.

He made a goalscoring impact off the bench at Arsenal and should start against Sheffield United in Forest’s first home game of the season.

Awoniyi’s injury enforced absence had a huge impact on Forest last season and they will hope the Nigerian forward can stay fit for the duration of the upcoming season.

Seven of Awoniyi’s ten league goals last season came against sides that finished in the bottom ten and he can make the difference against a side likely to be involved in a relegation dogfight.

Over 5.5 cards

There was a flurry of cards issued during the opening weekend of the season thanks to new referee directives calling for more bookings for time-wasting and dissent. A total of 43 cards were issued across the ten games, with Forest and Sheffield United receiving two and three cards respectively.

Forest picked up more yellow cards than any other team last season, receiving 84 bookings in 38 games.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, were the third-worst disciplined side in the Championship last year, picking up 98 yellow cards and three red cards in 46 games.

There is likely to be added needle in Friday night’s game due to the unsavoury scenes that took place after Forest’s play-off win when they last met in May 2022 and referee Peter Bankes may have his hands full on Friday.

Ryan Yates to commit two or more fouls

Ryan Yates committed a staggering 60 fouls last season, the most of any Forest player and the sixth-most of any Premier League player.

It is hardly surprising considering Forest boasted the worst possession average of any Premier League team and were the only team to average below 40% possession.
Forest also conceded the third-most fouls in the league last season, averaging 11.7 fouls per game.

Considering they play so much of the game without the ball, it isn’t a huge shock that they conceded so many fouls last year and it does not appear that it is going to be any different this season.

Forest are unlikely to dominate the ball on Friday night even against fellow relegation rivals Sheffield United and there is every chance that Yates will be forced to make two fouls.

Sheffield United to have four or more shots on target

Forest conceded the fourth-highest number of shots in the league last season and boasted the fourth-worst defensive record in the division.

Sheffield United, who scored twice on their last visit to the City Ground in May 2022, will fancy their chances of causing problems for the Forest defence.

The Blades had just one shot on target in a limp opening display against Crystal Palace at Bramall Lane but may be afforded more opportunities at the City Ground on Friday.
They could force several saves out of Matt Turner in the Forest goal.
