Man City v Newcastle
Premier League
Etihad Stadium, Saturday
TV: TNT Sports, 8pm
Man City to Win
Man City and Newcastle were both flawless in opening day wins over Burnley and Aston Villa respectively, but City have since put in a sluggish display against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup.
Pep Guardiola’s side were somewhat fortunate to beat Sevilla on penalties on Wednesday night and could easily have been 2-0 down before Cole Palmer drew them level. Guardiola fielded an extremely strong team for what is essentially the European edition of the Community Shield and it will be interesting to see if City are leggy in their first home Premier League game of the season on Saturday night.
Newcastle caused City plenty of problems in both of their league meetings last season and are likely to cause them similar problems on Saturday. Their new recruits look to have already embedded themselves in the side and they look capable of replicating their fourth-placed finish from last season.
City should have just about too much for them on Saturday, though.
Both Teams to Score
Newcastle ripped Aston Villa to shreds in their opening game of the season, scoring five times in a brilliant display of attacking football. They are unlikely to experience such joy against City but they are capable of breaching the City defence.
City’s backline was at times quite porous in their penalty shootout win over Sevilla and Newcastle will look to exploit the same weaknesses by hitting the hosts on the counter. It may not be as high-scoring as last season’s 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park, but there should be plenty of goals on Saturday.
Erling Haaland to Score Anytime
Erling Haaland was anonymous in City’s game against Sevilla, but he was also anonymous for most parts of their win against Burnley and managed to score two goals. That is just how Haaland is in some games and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him score on Saturday despite having about 15 touches of the ball.
Haaland scored a staggering 36 goals last season and is already en-route to producing a similar goalscoring return after his opening-day brace at Turf Moor. It is hard to back against him scoring in any game and it has gotten to the point where 5/6 represents good value for him to score anytime.
Alexander Isak to have 2 or More Shots on Target
Alexander Isak enjoyed an exceptional opening day, scoring twice in Newcastle’s win over Villa. The Swedish striker could be in line for a big season if he can steer clear of the injuries that hampered his campaign last year.
Isak is by far the most talented striker at Newcastle’s disposal and will be pivotal if they are to cause an upset at the Etihad. He will cause problems for City’s defence and is the most likely Newcastle player to find the back of the net.
He also represents good value to land two efforts on target on Saturday night.
Over 10.5 Corners
Saturday’s game sees a meeting between the two sides that won the most corners last season. Newcastle topped the list last season, winning 270 corners in 38 games at a rate of over seven per game. City, on the other hand, won 238 corners at a rate of over six per game.
The home side are likely to control the ball against Newcastle and are likely to win the vast majority of corners on Saturday as a result. But Toon will look to hit the home side on the counter and there is every chance that they win a number of corners themselves.
Both sides were involved in games with over 10 corners in their opening games of the season and it wouldn’t be surprising if they continued that trend when they face off here.
