Rodri to have 1 or More Shots on Target
With Man City facing off against Sevilla in this season’s Super Cup it’s worth remembering the man who got City there. Rodri won the club the Champions League with that great effort in the final against Inter Milan.
He only scored four goals in all competitions for City last term but that winning goal in the final seems to have given him confidence and he’s been shooting much more when in advanced positions since then. He had four shots against Burnley last week, three of which were on target, with one going in. It seems like he’s enjoying himself right now and getting into attacking spaces, so let’s back him to get another shot on target this Wednesday.
Erik Lamela to Commit 2 or More Fouls
Erik Lamela is almost certain to be starting on the left flank for Sevilla and we’re going to be backing the former Spurs man to commit two or more fouls against City. Last season he was a magnet for fouls, picking up 1.8 per game in La Liga and then averaging an awful 2.3 per game in the Europa League.
The Argentine has a habit of being hot-headed, hence picking up 14 cards last season for Sevilla and he started this year in similar form, giving up five fouls against Valencia in their La Liga season opener.
Ivan Rakitic to Commit 1 or More Fouls in the First Half
It’ll be Ivan Rakitic and Fernando in the middle against City tasked with having to anchor the midfield. Playing that position against this opposition must be one of the toughest tasks in football. You’ve got to deal with helping out your centre backs with Erling Haaland, closing down passing lanes and then having to deal with the incredible dynamism and movement in the City midfield.
That’s why I’m certain we’re going to see an early foul by Rakitic. The 35-year Croatian committed three fouls against Valencia this past weekend and he’s going to have a really difficult evening dealing with the speed and guile in City’s midfield.
The addition of Mateo Kovacic, a countryman of Rakitic, adds a new dynamic into the City midfield and he’s capable of running past players, something that’ll likely tempt Rakitic into making a tackle.
Over 1.5 Sevilla Cards
Yes, I know that this is the UEFA Super Cup and it’s nowhere near as prestigious as the major European competitions, such as the Europa League that Sevilla won last year. However, if we’ve learned anything from Sevilla in the past decade it’s that they love European silverware and will go into this game full of intensity.
The 2023 Europa League final win over Roma was a fierce affair with Sevilla picking up six yellow cards and committing 21 fouls. I’m pretty certain that we won’t be seeing a game quite as fiery on Wednesday but there’s a real chance that we’ll see bookings and I’m all over the Over 1.5 cards for Sevilla.
Marcos Acuna to be Shown a Card
Given that I’m expecting cards it makes sense to pick a player to receive one and in truth it could have been any one of Sevilla’s Argentine fullbacks. Gonzalo Montiel managed to pick up three bookings in just five Europa League games last season, even more impressive given that only two were starts, however he doesn’t make the cut here, because we’re not entirely confident of him starting.
Instead we’ll be going with his international team Marcos Acuna. The 31-year old left back already has one booking this season in Sevilla’s only La Liga game. Last season he managed 11 yellows and four red cards in Sevilla’s La Liga and Europa League campaigns. You probably also remember him from the World Cup where he was a menace, picking up three bookings. We’ll be backing him to continue that theme here.
