- EH, PADDY – WHAT THE HELL IS A MULTI-MATCH BET BUILDER? LET US EXPLAIN RIGHT HERE!
Australia v England
Women’s World Cup
Stadium Australia, Sydney
TV: BBC One, 11am
For a while, I thought I could pencil this Bet Builder in for mid-November by the time Australia’s penalty shootout with France had finished up.
But graciously, the Matildas got through that test, albeit by the skin of their teeth. You think that’s no great barometer for form, but then you look at their semi-final opponents and wonder if anyone here is capable of anything.
Mary Earps had her David Seaman moment against Colombia, and only a woeful goalkeeping error got them back into that game, and subsequently into the final four. So, where do we stand on this game?
Well, not to be a prophet of doom but I completely envisage this one going to a no-decision as long as it humanly can – and therefore being a slog to penalties eventually deciding the victor.
Draw
There are going to be an awful lot of second balls in this game. Australia need to find a way to pose a goal threat without leaving gaps, and they’re best-equipped to do that via the early cross into the box.
Sam Kerr proves an x-factor here but there’s no doubt that England are as proficient in the air, under the high ball. This will result in a lot of time where the ball isn’t actively in play, as well as England having possession with Australia keeping eight behind the ball.
Under 2.5 Goals
That, of course, lends itself to a game without many goals. And while there are enough players of quality to turn this game on its head, taking the Under 2.5 option as opposed to going all out for a nil-all draw aids the Bet Builder process.
Mary Fowler’s through ball for Australia’s opener is one of the best passes I’ve seen in any tournament worldwide, and the likelihood of something of similar quality happening again seems minimal.
Australia to Qualify for the Next Round
I can’t escape the idea that referees might be swayed by the home crowd here. For as much as I think the officiating has been good, I think Australia have picked up a few soft decisions along the way.
That, and the fact that their display of penalties was far more convincing that England’s was against Nigeria, makes me want to side with them.
Georgia Stanway to have 1 or more Shots on Target
If Wiegman opts for playing Rachel Daly out wide again, I think the biggest beneficiary of the crowded left-hand side is Georgia Stanway’s supporting runs off Alessia Russo.
Australia defend like that as well, where they shift a holding midfielder over to cut out the numerical advantage. Stanway is less of a risk than Lauren Hemp dropping into that space so they won’t feel the need to balance it out, either.
Mary Fowler to have 1 or more Shots on Target
Mary Fowler has been the Player of the Tournament for the hosts and while she’s primarily been doing it in a supporting role to this point, it’s become abundantly clear that should they need a bail out because they can’t get a cross into the box, the ball will be shifted to Fowler, who can move it out of her feet and fire from distance.
