Spain v Sweden
Women’s World Cup
Eden Park, Auckland
TV: BBC One, 9am
England obviously draw all the attention and you’d understand why, but this semi-final between Spain and Sweden does an even better job of depicting the crossroads that we’re at in the women’s game.
Sweden are representative of an older era where they set the standard alongside the US for professionalism in the sport, while Spain are the modern groupthink – combining the same philosophies of the men’s team in their output.
In a way, it’s more a celebration and for almost everyone, they’d rather see the Swedes win it because their path to glory would feel more organic – like Nottingham Forest winning a Premier League.
The fact this game will remain competitive means that the newfound funding into the sport hasn’t overshadowed the trailblazers and that’s worth noting.
So – for glory.
Sweden to Qualify for the Next Round
The reason I’ve added this is two-pronged. One – because I fully believe this is going to penalties regardless, such is the level of apprehension of these games now. And two – because Sweden will not become frustrated and lose their concentration, while Spain are absolutely capable of this, as seen in their group game against Japan.
Under 2.5 Goals
Sweden have been getting by through structure and some instances that aren’t return-to-mean-proof. They’ve reaped the benefit of managing to convert penalties in big moments, such as their winner against Japan in the last round, as well as the huge collection of penalties scored against the US, and their second goal against Argentina.
From open play, they’ve been less than inspiring – but ultimately don’t concede to teams who are incredibly dynamic. Spain fit that profile quite well, too.

Fridolina Rolfo to have 1 or More Shots on Target
The temptation here is to go with the frontlines, but in actual fact, Sweden’s shots are not coming from the likely places. Despite lining out at #9, Stina Blackstenius has had just one shot on target. The spaces that Sweden like to exploit are when the opposition pull back to the edge of their own box.
Given their tendency to move the ball down the right-hand side through Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Fridolina Rolfo and Filippa Angeldal are generally on the edge of the box, timing runs, to pick up the pieces. Rolfo, fresh off a Champions League win, feels like the big player for the big moment.
Sweden to Receive the Most Cards
The biggest issue people have when they back cards is they look at the history of cards but that’s not a feasible way to get a perspective. You need to focus on fouls because they’re the root cause. Over the course of ten referees, it’ll even out for cards to reflect the fouls committed.
For this tournament on a game-by-game basis, Sweden are conceding nearly fourteen fouls per game. Spain are committing less than ten – which is less than the tournament average. This should be an easy leg.
Teresa Abelleira to Commit 1 or More Fouls
The only game in which Teresa Abelleira didn’t commit so far was against Japan, and given they conceded four times from counters, it’s likely that she should have.
In a game that was close, like the Dutch clash, she committed three fouls and was very lucky not to be given a yellow card. She’s going to commit at least a foul here.
