Chelsea v Liverpool, Sunday, 13th August, 4:30pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event

It’s tough  to know what kind of team Chelsea will even put out on Sunday there’s been so many changes there. I watched some of their preseason games but there have been so many changes still.

Reece James is a good choice for captain as he’s come through the system there and is someone who can possibly bring the dressing room together because there have just been so many comings and goings.

It’s changes all the time there. And there’s still the question of which colour Moises Caicedo turns up in – red or blue?

They’ve still a lot of good players, and signed some more this summer, but there are so many questions about how they’ll line-up, it has to suit Liverpool.

Caicedo would’ve been a great signing for Liverpool but we’ll have to see what happens there.

I’d still expect Liverpool to be better this season.

The signings from last year will improve again – Gakpo, Nunez, they’ve Diaz coming back from injury too – and they’ve made some top players in midfield too this summer, which is really where the issues were last season.

Fabinho had fallen off a bit and Henderson wasn’t what he had been. It meant defensively they were exposed.

But I think they’re addressing that issue and it’ll make them better this season.

I wouldn’t call them a “surprise package” because they’re a top side already, but I’m confident they’ll bounce back after last season.

And that should start with a win against Chelsea on Sunday. They can put on a show, even at Stamford Bridge.

It’s easy to forget as well for some that Mo Salah’s been probably the best player in the Premier League over the last five years too!

He’s definitely in the top three anyway, and you can sometimes take it for granted how good he is. I fancy him to open his season’s account on Sunday.

When you’re not signing forwards over the summer people can also forget about the talent that’s there already alongside Salah – Gakpo, Diaz, Nunez, Jota – these are top players.

Liverpool can challenge in the league for sure with that firepower, and I expect Darwin Nunez to get better with a year at the club under his belt. He should pose problems for Chelsea too.

Towards the end of last season Trent Alexander-Arnold was deployed a different, more central role sometimes – quite effectively, as it happens – and I expect him to benefit from the improvements in midfield this season.

He should be involved heavily in this game too and that may lead to a foul or two.

As I said, Reece James is the captain now and an excellent choice, but Chelsea will struggle here because they really like a brand new team. I can see him having to make a few interventions against Liverpool’s attackers that will get the ref’s attention.
