Newcastle v Aston Villa
St James’ Park, Saturday 5:30pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Premier League

Newcastle -1

Both Newcastle and Aston Villa enjoyed impressive pre-seasons, remaining unbeaten and recording some impressive wins. They also drew with each other in a thrilling 3-3 draw in Philadelphia as part of the Premier League Summer Series. There is a huge difference between a pre-season game and the opening game of the Premier League season, however, and Newcastle should have too much for Villa on this occasion.

Both sides have signed well over the summer, strengthening in key areas, but it is Newcastle who have made the more impressive acquisitions ahead of their return to Champions League football.

Newcastle thumped Villa 4-0 in the same fixture last season, although that result comes with a rather large caveat. Villa were still enduring the disastrous managerial reign of Steven Gerrard at the time of that 4-0 drubbing and improved significantly after Unai Emery took over, thumping Newcastle 3-0 in the reverse fixture in April.

It would be hugely surprising if Newcastle ran out 4-0 winners again, but they should receive a huge boost from playing in front of their home fans on the opening day and should open their account with a relatively convincing win.

Alexander Isak to Score Anytime

Alexander Isak enjoyed a fairly decent opening season at St. James’ Park, especially considering he missed roughly half the season through injury. The Swedish striker scored 10 times in 17 league starts and will look to kick on during the upcoming campaign.

Isak was instrumental towards the tail end of last season and helped Newcastle secure a place in the top four with vital winners against the likes of Brentford and Nottingham Forest. He performed relatively well in pre-season and scored against Villa in that 3-3 draw. He is good value to repeat the feat on Saturday evening.

Over 4.5 Cards

Both Newcastle and Villa picked up their fair share of cards last season.

Newcastle received 62 bookings and one sending off in 38 league games at an average of just under two per game, while Villa picked up 80 yellow cards and one red card at an average of over two per game.

Eddie Howe’s side became notorious for low “ball-in-play” averages last season and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them pick up a card or two for time wasting on Saturday, especially with the Premier League’s new added-on time laws coming into effect.

Villa, on the other hand, are managed by Unai Emery, a manager who is not averse to some dark arts tactics too. They are almost certain to pick up some yellow cards on Saturday. This Premier League opener could be a feisty occasion.

Over 5.5 Newcastle Corners

Newcastle won an average of almost seven corners per game in the league last season, the highest of any team in the division. They are likely to win at least six corners on Saturday given that they will almost certainly dominate possession and territory in front of their own supporters.

Newcastle averaged 15 shots per game in the league last season and will probably win plenty of corners if they can match that average in the opening game of the new season.

Aston Villa to have 3 or More Shots on Target

Villa scored the fewest goals of any team in the top ten last season, managing just 51 goals all season. However, they still averaged a fairly respectable 11 shots per game in the league and are capable of causing problems for any team they come up against, especially after the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby.

Newcastle had the joint-best defensive record in the league last season along with Manchester City, conceding just 33 goals. However, Howe’s side faced an average 10.2 shots per game, a record bettered by three clubs and matched by Brighton.

There is every chance that Villa will find the target on at least three occasions on Saturday.
