Spain v Netherlands
Wellington Regional Stadium, Wellington, 2am
TV: ITV
Netherlands and Draw
The Dutch may not be the fancied nation in this, but you might recall me tipping them as a live bet before the tournament started. They were 20/1 and I believe the opening par was:
Similar concept whereby the Dutch team just couldn’t stick Mark Parsons. Imagine that – an Englishman going to try and use his weird terminology to try and gloss over a nation whose footballing culture was led by Johann Cruyff. Imagine.
The Dutch are led by a back three who boast so much experience of playing against clever off-the-ball movement in the Champions League that they really won’t struggle to keep Spain at arm’s length. This is a great value play.
Under 1.5 Goals
This might seem crazy but when Spain get to this stage of a tournament, they almost always become risk-averse and won’t send midfielders to free up gaps in behind the play.
It completely throws their flow off and they look disjointed. Given that the Netherlands themselves can be a fairly uninspiring outfit when it comes to carving out chances when they’re not maintaining possession, this could be a tense, boring encounter.
Jackie Groenen to Be Shown a Card
Jackie Groenen is a hilarious footballer. She just strolls around the place kicking people and I really enjoy it. Twelve fouls so far; five more than any of her teammates, and there is absolutely no team worse to play against if you like a cynical foul than Spain.

Japan v Sweden
Eden Park, Auckland, 8:30am
TV: BBC One
Sweden to Qualify for the Next Round
The Swedes have the capacity to ensure Japan don’t get into those wide areas where they do so much damage. Rolfo might be the best attacking threat that they have in the final third but she’s rare in that she doesn’t shy away from her defensive duties.
Japan have yet to fall behind at this World Cup – a scenario that will expose them massively.
Over 1.5 Goals
Japan cannot play in tight spaces, so when they do ultimately ship a goal, they’re going to need to commit players forward to open the space between full back and centre half.
That should cause absolute chaos in midfield and see multiple chances every few minutes – and with the conversion rate that these two are maintaining right now, I’d be banking on multiple goals coming from these high-percentage chances.
