Carabao Cup: Wrexham v Wigan Tuesday, August 8: 8pm TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Football
Wrexham To Win
Wrexham kicked off their League Two campaign with a 5-3 defeat at home to MK Dons. Despite the surprising scoreline, the underlying statistics weren’t too bad for Phil Parkinson’s outfit as they had 23 shots, 65 per cent of the ball and a decent passing accuracy of 74 per cent.
The Red Dragons’ recent record at the Racecourse is impeccable – 22 wins and one draw in the National League last term – so the opening-day defeat to the Dons could be viewed further down the line as nothing more than a freak blip.
Wigan have greater priorities than the Carabao Cup as they started the League One season on minus-eight points, which is already down to five after Charlie Wyke’s brace secured an opening-day victory at promotion fancies Derby last weekend.
The slight concern that Latics boss Shaun Maloney could see this competition as a potential distraction from the club’s immediate ambitions means I can’t look past Wrexham To Win to get this Bet Builder rolling.
Over 2.5 Goals
If it’s entertainment you’re after then Wrexham’s home ground is the place to be, which is hardly surprising for a club owned by Hollywood pair Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
In addition to there being eight goals in last Saturday’s defeat to the MK Dons, 83 per cent of Wrexham’s home matches last season saw punters treated to three goals a game or more. Woof!
There were three goals in Wigan’s season opener at Derby and Over 2.5 Goals would have landed in 39 per cent of their games on the road in the Championship – when they were fighting doggedly against relegation – last term.
The prospect of changes to the starting XIs and Wrexham playing on the front foot means I’m going to take a chance on Over 2.5 Goals coming through once again.
While you can’t read too much into the opening-day results, Wrexham managed to concede five goals from six shots on target against MK Dons. The longer term trends also indicate that the Red Dragons aren’t the most trustworthy to keep a clean sheet as Both Team To Score would have landed in 57 per cent of their home games last term.
Wigan have kept just one clean sheet since the start of pre-season and 61 per cent of their games on the road in 2022/23 resulted in both teams finding the back of the net.
Wrexham will want to get the victory in front of the Sky Sports cameras while Wigan will probably see this as a bit of a free hit. As I’m expecting an entertaining contest, I can’t look past Both Teams To Score.
Jordan Davies To Score Anytime
Jordan Davies stepped off the bench to score in Wrexham’s loss to MK Dons and is likely to come into the starting XI for this cup clash.
The central midfielder has an eye for goal – he found the back of the net on 15 occasions in 2021/22 – and a track record of mini-scoring streaks.
As previously mentioned, Wrexham play attacking football on their own patch so he should be on the end of a chance or two. Jordan Davies To Score Anytime rounds things off.
