Blackburn v West Brom

EFL football is finally back after a long, cold six weeks. To celebrate, we’ve rustled up a mighty Multi-Match Bet Builder straddling all three of the EFL’s divisions to hopefully get us off to a winning start in 2023/24. First up it’s Blackburn v West Brom in the Championship.

Over 2.5 Goals

It’s always tricky making grandiose declarations before a ball’s been kicked but a clash between two former top-flight sides who finished just outside the playoffs, and three points apart, might be a good place to have a dart. I think Over 2.5 Goals might be the play here and it’s a bet that clicked in this fixture last season.

Blackburn triumphed 2-1 on that day which was also an early-season scrimmage and we’ll be hoping for more of the same here. Rovers averaged a shade under 2.5 goals a game last term while The Baggies did likewise. With both looking to come out and lay down a marker I’ll take a chance on Over 2.5 Goals here.

Northampton v Stevenage

Our League One contest takes in two of the new boys with both Northampton and Stevenage being promoted from League Two last term. While you might be tempted to err on the side of caution and expect neither looking to lose on their opening day in the third tier, I’ll be taking on goals again here.

Both Teams To Score

Over 2.5 Goals clicked in three of the last four games between these two and we had seven in the two matches last term with both teams netting in all of those games. Both, obviously, scored plenty on the way to automatic promotion and both will surely be targeting the win here.

Given that Northampton are a yo-yo side at this level and Stevenage rarely dabble with the third tier, each will be keen to pick up the points and get up and running. Neither will fear the other and hopefully that will result in a decent contest with Both Teams To Score.

Wrexham v MK Dons

We’ll finish off in League Two where the Disney+/The Cycling GK/Hollywood crossover project Wrexham take on the Franchise club, MK Dons. Not one for the footballing purists perhaps, but definitely an interesting matchup with two unusual clubs heading into this league from differing directions following the hosts’ promotion from the Vanarama and MK’s drop from League One.

Wrexham to Win

Momentum is a powerful thing in sport and it’s undeniable that Wrexham have it in spades. Fresh off a tour of the US of A, Phil Parkinson’s boys will be chomping at the bit to get stuck into their first game back in the EFL for over a decade. Conversely, it’s probably the last team MK would have wanted first up as they look to get off to a quick start and reclaim some upward trajectory.

But Wrexham’s squad it littered with talent that, bar a Hollywood takeover, would be playing at League One level. While their talismanic forward Paul Mullin is recovering at Rob McElhenney’s house following a punctured lung sustained against Manchester United in San Diego (honestly) they’ve got the quality, the momentum, and a will be backed by a buoyed and boisterous home support to help them get off flyer with a Wrexham Win.

Over 2.5 Goals

Despite Mullins’ absence for the early part of the season I think we can still expect The Dragons to rack up plenty of goals this year. They demolished the league below last term, bagging a monster 116 goals in 46 games last term while still shipping just under a goal a game themselves.

MK, on the other hand, failed to score a goal a game but conceded 66 in their 46 outings in the league above. League Two will be a different kettle of fish for Wrexham while their visitors will undoubtedly find it easier after their reset. The key to this is that Wrexham will come flying out of the blocks and look to make their mark on the division early while being quite porous at the back, so we’ll take Over 2.5 Goals again.
