You very rarely get much of an insight into the top-level of the Premier League. I don’t know what Kevin De Bruyne does on his day off, but what his preference for a juice complement to his breakfast is.
But the Champions League qualifiers give you a chance to interact with football clubs you really don’t anticipate.
So naturally this intro will feature a story.
It was two weeks ago and Shamrock Rovers were hosting Breidablik in Tallaght. The team were strolling around rather unusual parts of Dublin, presumably trying to catch sights or something to eat.
But given their lack of stature in Europe, two old women walked past them as the squad took up the entirety of a footpath, and muttered to each other: ‘Those bloody Spanish students are forever doing them summer tours over here’.
So my proposal for this bet builder is that, depending on the amount of money you’ve won, to maybe donate a few quid to Breidablik so they can upgrade their tracksuit supplier. Dios mio!
This is one of those rare ties where one team is simply just better than the other, and oftentimes the biggest reason people believe the games to be closer than they are is down to the fact that one team isn’t mid-season right now, so possess a fitness edge.
That team is actually Astana – they’re midway through their campaign and still got hammered in the first leg. I’d often suggest backing against them in a second leg like this is a bad idea, but their loss to Kyzyl on Saturday means they’re in somewhat of a slump and this looks like a value bet.
One of the biggest tells of a quality side is when they go two goals down in a first leg and can just immediately bring it back level without too much effort.
Qarabag is another one of those clubs you know about in Europe who are well-funded but they’re hard to gauge. Well, all you really need to know is they’re a touch better than Rakow, especially given the drop-off in standard of Polish results in Europe over the last three years.
Qarabg not only have a ridiculous home record, but actually possess a 42% win rate in Champions League football. That will be among the best records in Europe for teams outside of Europe’s big five.
It might well be a close-run thing between Young Boys and Genk over two legs, but you can forget this being a competitive second matchup. Servette are 212th in UEFA’s rankings, and they’re a good 20 points worse off than the elite in Switzerland.
For context, last year’s side, who are an odds-on shot to outshine this year’s crop, lost 3-0 to Molde in the second round of the Conference League qualifiers.
This is the only tie with a short price that I’m really unsure of. KI are one of the best-coached teams in Europe’s peripheries and I think Hacken would have gotten a bit of a shock to the system last week.
And that solidity will follow them over to Sweden now, where Hacken, while naturally never feeling under threat, will be stuck for time when push comes to shove. You can’t have a game with three goals when one side is incapable of scoring, but also not capable of conceding more than a couple themselves.
Sheriff were a fun story over the last few years, where various YouTube vloggers were on-site to try grab the weirdest ticket in Champions League history.
Well, do you know what’s happened since? Ismaila’s gone back to Japan, Steve Ambri plays for Nimes and Mouhamed Diop lines out for Troyes.
These aren’t the same unit that didn’t need to just rely on their weird home advantage last year – it might be all they have as they’ve gone to replace talented imports with the dregs of the niche leagues of Europe.
