22- ACCA CRACKER - NEW CAP 1024

Panathinaikos v Dnipro – Both Teams to Score

Stadio Apóstolos Nikolaidis, Athens, 6:30pm

You naturally feel for Dnipro in so far as they’re essentially forfeiting home advantage by playing their first leg in Kosicie in Slovakia – and to that point, you can kind of forfeit any perception you have about ‘the flow of the game’.

There’s no reason at all to believe that the second leg will be any different to the first, apart from the Greeks playing it slightly more conservatively.

Artem Dovbyk was starved of proper service in the first leg and that’s largely due to the early Sporar goal that forced the Ukrainians to be slower on the ball. That’ll ultimately correct itself here.

BATE v Aris Limassol – Limassol to Win

 Városi Stadion, Mezőkövesd, 7pm

A lot of people tend to be very confused by some of the results that occur in Europe. And I’m not really sure why, given the fact they rely on the names of clubs they’ve seen do well five years ago, and haven’t seen a competitive ball kicked in the relevant leagues in their lifetimes.

What you need to realise is that football is a complex business, and the only reason that BATE are in this position is because the top two sides in Belarus last year were found guilty of match-fixing. Borisov are in no way, shape or form ready for this competition and their squad is severely under-prepared for this campaign.

Hence the first leg scoreline. Don’t back something based on your fond historical recollections.

Olimpija v Ludogorets – Ludogorets to Win

Stadion Stožice, Ljubljana, 7pm

One of these teams is well-funded and the other isn’t. Now, that’s not always the best way to approach these qualifiers of course, but when a leg looks most likely to be priced based on the first matchup of the tie, you can exploit the situation somewhat.

Losing a player like Igor Thiago seemed like it would really hamper Ludogorets but actually, in hanging onto the equally talented Kiril Despodov and Matias Tissera, they’re showing that they’re capable of fending off severe interest from the second tier of European leagues.

To give context to the size of the task facing Olimpija – their captain couldn’t get a game for Derby County in 2019 and has just a handful of caps for the national side.

Slovan Bratislava v Zrinjski – Over 2.5 Goals

Štadión Tehelné pole, Bratislava, 7:30pm

Nine of the ten first legs of the second round of Champions League qualifiers had a goal or fewer between the sides.

Those same nine games saw their second legs average 3.9 goals between them. The first goal opens up the urgency after about two hours’ worth of tension.

This is a prime example of the same.
