China v England
Women’s World Cup 2023, Group D
Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide, Tuesday, 12pm
ITV/STV/RTE2
England to Win
England may have won both of their games at the Women’s World Cup but they have been far from impressive so far and could find themselves exiting the tournament if they lose to China and Denmark beat Haiti. Sarina Wiegman’s side have been plagued by absentees and do not look remotely like the side that won the European championships last summer. They have won both games by the narrowest of margins and could have drawn both of them, with Haiti and Denmark both spurning golden chances late on.
Coming up against Asian champions China, there are likely to be a few nerves on display on Tuesday, especially if Denmark take an early lead and the prospect of a group stage elimination becomes more realistic.
However, they boast one of the strongest squads at the tournament, despite their extensive injury list, and should have enough to make it three wins out of three.
Lauren James to have 2 or More Shots on Target
Lauren James made a huge impact off the bench in England’s opening win over Haiti and scored the only goal as the Lionesses beat Denmark last time out. Her performances in England’s two games so far have surely guaranteed her a place in the starting line-up on Tuesday.
She appears to be the most threatening of England’s forward players at present and is good value to register two shots on target on Tuesday. England have had 15 shots on target in their two games to date and are likely to add significantly to that tally against China. There is a good chance that James will be responsible for at least two of them.

Over 10.5 Corners
England have won 16 corners in their two World Cup games to date at a rate of eight per game. Wiegman’s side have enjoyed more than 70% possession in each game and have largely dominated territory as well.
It is highly likely that they will enjoy the same statistical supremacy against China on Tuesday and it would be surprising if they didn’t match their corner average at the very least.
Wiegman’s side have also been coughing up chances at the other end and have conceded a minimum of two corners per game despite enjoying so much of the ball. With China needing a result to qualify, they are surely going to throw everything they can at the English defence and should win a few corners of their own.

China to have 3 or More Shots on Target
England’s opponents have gotten far more joy than most pundits would have predicted. Haiti almost snatched a late equaliser when Roseline Eloissant went through on goal, only to be denied by Mary Earp’s outstretched foot.
Denmark, meanwhile, came even closer when Amelie Vansgaard crashed a header against the post with five minutes remaining.
Both Denmark and Haiti managed two shots on target against England, but China need a win on Tuesday and are likely to throw everything they can at the English goal. They average three shots on target per game at the World Cup and can match that average on Tuesday.
Under 0.5 England Cards
England were uncharacteristically ill-disciplined in their opening game against Haiti, committing 17 fouls and receiving two yellow cards. They were much more like themselves against Denmark, committing just seven fouls and receiving no bookings.
The Lionesses have received no cards in five of their last seven games, committing fewer than 10 fouls in five of those games. They will almost certainly control possession, reducing the number of opportunities to commit fouls and pick up cards. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them go blemish-free once again.
