Ireland v Nigeria Women’s World Cup 2023

BBC Red Button
I’d hold my hands up and say if I thought Ireland had disappointed me, but given we’ve looked competitive in both games, particularly against Australia, it’s very hard to find too much fault.
But obviously that’s the rational approach which means the entire country has gone the other way and wishes ill-will upon Vera Pauw and wants the entire FAI sacked because we lost by the odd goal to two of the best teams in the world.
Never an easy journey through the fandom of this nation, I swear.
But the legacy of this campaign isn’t for angry men who can’t see the bigger picture – it’s about the impact it’s had on the young girls in this country seeing their professional ambitions in this sport being materialized.
Does this possibly get embellished by a result against Nigeria? Absolutely – and it’ll go a long way to silence the nonsense we’re hearing over and over again about them underachieving when that simply isn’t the case.
Still – one big last hurrah to show how minimal investment can propel the country to big heights rather quickly on the global stage, eh? No pressure, folks.
Ireland and the Draw
There was a lot of game management going on against Australia and Canada, you know.
Not giving it proper welly until the final few minutes really limited what we could do in terms of our delivery into the box and I feel that did nobody any favours.
And then against Canada, that early goal almost hindered us to a degree whereby you convince yourself you’ve got thirty minutes to grab a second or you’re giving up the points because Canada are better.
For Vera Pauw, a result doesn’t matter and I like that here.
We don’t need to worry about anything other than setting traps for our pacey wing backs to run into when Nigeria lose possession, and they’re incredibly loose with the ball.
I don’t see Ireland being beaten with the pressure of opportunity firmly on Nigeria’s shoulders.
Ha, yes. Ireland appear to be dangerous from set pieces again which isn’t Just us relying on tropes – between Louise Quinn and Katie McCabe, there’s a live opportunity at every dead ball and given the Nigerians looked incredibly suspect under crosses coming into the box against the Matildas, there’s a glaring mismatch to-hand.
Now we just hope it’s being implemented.
Uchenna Kanu To Score Anytime
Playing for Louisville in Kentucky – a hotbed for talented players playing outside of Europe’s big five leagues – Kanu made quite the impression against Australia and looks a real X-factor for them in build-up play.
She’s the key to their pressing when they push up on the opposing wing back – and with her likely being tasked with applying pressure to Heather Payne, you can envisage a world where she’s overrun back there, leading to opportunities.
Half-Time: Ireland
They’ve started games incredibly well and that’s been the consistent theme. It’s really been the opposite for Nigeria in that they fell behind to Australia and really should have been punished more by Canada in their opener.
Given the anxiety they’ll likely face now, I’d suspect them to be sheepish going into this, while Ireland’s loose approach should free them from self-enforced expectation.
