So, there it is. That Katie McCabe corner is enough for me to live off of fumes for the next twenty years, but the importance is being able to support the development of players at international level. Abbie Larkin still plies her trade in the Women’s Premier Division in Ireland, lining out for Shamrock Rovers – and it’s important to note that the only way you can guarantee that this push behind domestic football is backed.
That applies to League of Ireland competitions wholesale, and while it might take more than a Lourdes-type miracle to turn people back on to Stephen Kenny’s approach after that disaster in Greece, it’s still a valid point.
The league returns this weekend after a rather uneventful FAI Cup weekend, but since then, Shamrock Rovers’ form in both Cup and Europe has blown this entire thing wide open again.
But there’s probably even more to play for in the race for Europe – with a trifecta of fixtures impacting that this weekend. And hey, they might not even disgrace the country next year by losing to pub teams in cities that Google Maps don’t even recognise. Not bitter at all, clearly.
This might sound cynical and obviously the signing of Eanna Clancy at least provides an increase in terms of footballing composure when playing out from the back, but man, UCD look like they’ve packed it in.
My only concern for Bohs was that Jonathan Afolabi wasn’t firing at all, but he found the net the last time out so that goes some way to alleviating those issues.
UCD in their last few outings have conceded twice to second tier Cobh Ramblers, three times to Drogheda United, four times to Shels and seven times to St. Pat’s.
Bohs are maybe the only team in the country equipped to beat teams by breaking on them or wearing down their low block because of their ball-strikers. This could get ugly for the students.
While the window is still open, City owner Dermot Usher has come under fire for not reinforcing the squad and the mood at Turner’s Cross is a real issue. They’re onto their sixth starting goalkeeper this season which is a real issue for communication and you can see it in recent performances.
Given Shels will gladly sit back and absorb half-interested pressure before striking on them, I anticipate one goal being enough to get this done for the Reds on Leeside.
Sligo are a lot of things, but they’re absolutely not boring. The Bit O’Red have yet to keep a clean sheet in any game this season that has finished with 22 men – go figure.
Since Drogheda lost their key goalscorer in Freddie Draper, they’ve had to be slightly more adventurous in the final third and it’s ironically wielding more chances for Kevin Doherty’s crew.
Adam Foley has stepped up in that regard and his run of form suggests to me that confidence is high. Both teams have scored in six of their last seven games in all competitions, including the teams’ meeting last week, which ended 2-1 to the Drogs. We’re going with Both Teams to Score here.
