England v Denmark
Women’s World Cup 2023, Group D
Brisbane Stadium, Brisbane, Friday, 9:30am
BBC/STV/RTE2
Draw
England were incredibly disappointing in their opening day win over Haiti on Saturday. As low as 1/80 to beat Haiti, the Lionesses never looked comfortable and had Mary Earps to thank for a sprawling save that prevented a late equaliser.
Was it complacency against such an unfancied side? Or are the injuries and absentees taking their toll on the European champions? Friday morning’s meeting with Denmark will reveal a lot about the true nature of England’s performance against Haiti.
Like England, Denmark were flawless in qualifying, winning eight games out of eight to book a place in Australia and New Zealand. The Danes also opened their World Cup account with a narrow 1-0 win over China and will provide England with a much sterner test than Haiti – on paper at least.
Sarina Wiegman’s side may be forced to settle for a point on Friday morning.
Alessia Russo to Score Anytime
Alessia Russo may have failed to score in England’s group opener, but she still remains their biggest threat in front of goal. Russo scored five goals in qualifying for the World Cup, a fairly low total compared with the likes of Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp.
However, she scored four goals at the Euros last summer and finished as England’s second-highest goalscorer behind Beth Mead, who misses the World Cup through injury.
Russo comes into the World Cup on the back of a sensational season with Manchester United, which saw her score 10 goals in 20 league appearances as United finished second in the WSL for the first time ever. She is clearly a player for the big occasion and will be desperate to make her mark at the World Cup sooner rather than later.

Lauren James to have 1 or More Shots on Target
The decision to leave Lauren James out of the starting line-up against Haiti was made all the more baffling when James came on as a second-half substitute. James made a significant impact off the bench and offered England far more of a threat in attack. It would be shocking if she was not given a chance from the start on Friday.
Regardless of their unconvincing display against Haiti, England are still likely to dominate the game against Denmark on Saturday and are likely to pepper the Danish goal with shots.
They have recorded 71 shots on target in their last ten games in all competitions and should at least match their ten-game average of seven shots on target against Denmark on Friday. James is good value to have at least one of those shots.

Lucy Bronze to Commit 1 or More Fouls
England committed a whopping 17 fouls in their win over Haiti on the opening day, picking up two yellow cards. It was an uncharacteristic display for a side that rarely commits more than 10 fouls, especially against the so-called lesser nations. However, it was also symbolic of what has been a fairly feisty World Cup to date.
England may not reach the lofty heights of 17 fouls on Friday, but they are still likely to commit several fouls against Denmark. Lucy Bronze is a good bet to commit at least one foul. The Barcelona right-back committed an average of over one foul per game in Spain last season and there is a good chance that she will be called up.
Over 9.5 Corners
Both England and Denmark were involved in games featuring ten corners in their opening games and it wouldn’t be surprising if Friday’s game followed a similar pattern. Neither defence looked particularly sharp, conceding chances that ultimately led to corner kicks.
At the other end, both sides are sufficiently threatening to carve out opportunities of their own and are both likely to win a number of corners. Several teams have threatened from corners at this World Cup and Denmark will hope that they can cause problems for England on Friday.
