Saturday 10.30am: England Women v Haiti Women
TV: ITV1, STV, ITVX, STV Player
England (-5)
FIFA’s decision to expand the Women’s World Cup from 24 teams to 32 teams was always going to result in mismatches and Saturday’s clash between England and Haiti is one such example. Tournament debutants Haiti come up against European champions England in their first-ever outing at the Women’s World Cup and it is difficult to see anything but a comfortable English win on Saturday morning.
England were imperious in qualifying, winning all ten games and scoring a staggering 80 goals. They also went through their qualifying campaign without conceding a goal.
Squashed in between that, Sarina Wiegman’s side won the European championships, winning all six games en route to glory. Haiti, on the other hand, qualified for the World Cup via the inter-confederation play-offs after suffering heavy defeats against Jamaica and the USA.
They have won just one of their last six games – against Moldova in a friendly – and will be hoping to avoid a hammering on Saturday morning. However, it is difficult to see anything but an emphatic win for the English. We’ll go with the whopping England (-5) handicap.
Lauren Hemp to score anytime
Wiegman’s side come into the World Cup besieged by injuries. Beth Mead, who finished as England’s top scorer in qualifying with 13 goals, misses out through injury, while the influential Fran Kirby has also been sidelined.
Meanwhile Ellen White, who was England’s second-highest scorer in qualifying, has since retired from the sport. It will now fall to the likes of Ella Toone, Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp to provide the goals if England are to find glory Down Under.
All three could conceivably score against Haiti on Saturday, but it is Hemp to Score Anytime that represents the best value. The Manchester City star scored seven goals in qualifying and will have plenty of chances against a weak Haiti outfit.

Ella Toone to have two or more shots on target
Ella Toone comes into the World Cup after a fine season with Manchester United and is good value to find the target at least twice on Saturday. The United midfielder was England’s joint-second top scorer in qualifying alongside White, scoring 10 goals in 10 games.
She also gave the Lionesses the lead in their game against Brazil in the Finalissima in April. There is a good chance that Toone will find the back of the net on Saturday, but Toone is much better value to register Two or More Shots On Target.
Lucy Bronze to Commit Two or More Fouls
The Women’s World Cup has seen a fairly high volume of fouls so far, most notably in a particularly feisty encounter between Australia and Ireland on the opening day. England are unlikely to commit too many fouls in a game that they are likely to dominate from start to finish, but it is conceivable that they will commit several fouls in Haiti’s half as they lay siege to the Haitian goal.
Of those who are most likely to commit fouls on Saturday, Barcelona’s Lucy Bronze is arguably the most probable to do so. The veteran right back committed more than a foul per game in Spain last season and Bronze offers decent value to Commit Two or More Fouls on Saturday.
