We’ve got two teams from the UK and Ireland in Champions League qualification action on Tuesday night and both have deficits to overturn if they’re to make it through to the second round.
Welsh champions The New Saints are 3-1 down after a tough trip to Sweden while the League of Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers head to Iceland looking to overturn a 1-0 loss at Tallaght Stadium last week.
7pm: The New Saints v Hacken
Hacken (-1)
TNS are really up against it here but they do at least have home advantage to fall back on. However, everything else is firmly against them. Hacken are in really good form and they’re third in the Allsvenskan, a league far stronger than the Cymru Premier, with 10 wins after 15 games. They’re also at peak fitness and are slap-bang in the middle of their domestic season.
The 3-1 loss over in Gothenburg was TNS’ first competitive match of the season and they were kept at arm’s length for the whole contest. It clicked in the first game and I think there’s a decent price on Hacken (-1) here.
Over 2.5 Goals
Another bet that landed in the first match, Over 2.5 Goals, is a frequent winner when these two take to the pitch. TNS destroy the Welsh league every season, they scored 112 goals last term, and they bagged in the first leg so could well do so again on Tuesday.
Hacken have seen Over 2.5 Goals in five of their last six matches in all competitions, conceding in four of those. It looks like a high-scoring affair is on the cards so take the Overs.
On paper Shamrock Rovers have a better chance of making it to the Champions League second qualification round than The Saints from across the Irish Sea. They’ve just got a one-goal deficit to overcome against the side currently ranked 3rd in the Icelandic league.
Rovers are top of the League of Ireland but have been in shaky form of late, particularly away from home. Breidablik have been hammering everyone domestically and have a good thing going on home turf so it’s got to be Breidablik to Win.
Over 2.5 Goals
I think the sensible thing is to again back goals. As touched on there, Breidablik are in lethal form and Rovers might have been lucky to get away with a 1-0 loss. They might not get so lucky again here.
There have been Over 2.5 Goals (and on occasion well over) in all eight of their most recent games prior to last week’s first leg. Rovers will have to go for it at some point and, while they’ve been fairly miserly of late, that could leave them open for punishment as the game goes on.
