While you really don’t want to be sitting around while your rivals are playing in Europe because, well, they’re playing in Europe – it does offer a sniff of momentum to you domestically that they can’t have.
Especially given the results. Rovers have stunk the place out in the league, before getting done by a team from Iceland who sound like a bad guy in a mid-range Bond film. Then Pat’s went to Luxembourg and were beaten by Dudelange. All of these at least appeared to be favourable draws but it hasn’t really transpired like that.
When those teams do return to domestic action, they could find themselves in a morale slump, with their rivals having capitalised due to their games in hand. Two such teams are Bohs and Shels, who themselves can easily begin to cement their European credentials if they could just decide to kick it up a notch.
While UCD are facing their most important game of the season as they aim to claw back the only time whose budgetary restrictions could see them finish second from bottom.
So, while the big cats are away, the ehh… other teams try to.. pick up some, ehh.. points?
These two will ultimately cancel each other out because Bohemians now know they can’t be as loose in midfield in the early part of games anymore, so they’ll likely play two sixes which, when going up against a very low-sitting Shels, should result in one of the most tepid Dublin derbies you will ever witness in your life.
You can tell they’re not putting me in charge of marketing, clearly.
Now, what I will say is that there’s every chance we see a whole host of cards in this, especially as on-field and off-field results over the last four-to-six weeks for these two have been middling at best.
So expect disjointed mayhem to rain.
Under 2.5 Goals
Before playing UCD, which is an outlier for anyone’s goalscoring average, Shels’ run of results read like this: 1-1, 0-1, 1-1. 3-2, 0-0, 0-0, 0-1.
Damien Duff’s mantra is to bore his way to Europe – a bit like booking a fortnight in Salou – and nothing will deter him from sitting in and making this a tightly-fought affair, especially as he continues to convince his team that they’re underdogs.
For all that UCD are dreadful, and they are DREADFUL, the addition of Eanna Clancy and the departures of Freddie Draper and Alicha Ahui make this a far nervier evening than it would have been two weeks ago for Kevin Doherty.
Capitalising on a Rovers squad that was rotated for Europe, and quite frankly, just not that interested, they picked up a draw which convinced everyone they’d continue in spite of the losses.
Given they’re now signing second-string Shelbourne players to flesh out the squad, I think not.
Under 2.5 Goals
Freddie Draper’s link-up with Adam Foley, Darragh Markey and Dayle Rooney was a well-oiled machine, but with that goalscoring outlet gone, you’re back being reliant on players who are aren’t getting bigger moves due to their lack of consistency.
It’s a sad state, but it is what it is.
Drogs’ worst results this year have been against sides around them that they feel they should beat and this fits that profile.
