So, the title race we called over last week is now back on, clearly. Shamrock Rovers know Europe is coming and they’re clearly keeping something up their sleeve but that approach has seen them stumble, and, I’d guess, refocus now.
Come to think of it, the only team in the league that might actually be happy are St. Pat’s? Rovers aren’t putting the league to bed; Derry’s own manager is ghosting them; Bohemians’ great start has gone flat.
Shels have their off-field issues to contend with; Sligo are s***e; Drogheda have lost their two best players. Cork City are finishing second bottom and know this from three months out, and UCD is a state of mind rather than a footballing entity.
You may think I’ve forgotten Dundalk but I’m intentionally leaving them out because one result will change their outlook completely. The League of Ireland is a big pile of misery and I for one adore the cynicism it attracts. Still, at least we’re not being bought out by the Saudis eh? Sorry, what’s this about the Turkish Simon Cowell?
Bohemians v Dundalk – Both Teams to Score
Dundalk are the form team in the country right now and Pat Hoban’s record-breaking boost has all but re-engaged a fanbase that had gone somewhat stagnant.
They’re very hard to stop when they’re on it because of the real quality they possess and while losing loan players in the window is somewhat of a tough blow to take, their current wave of euphoria should be more than enough to see them approach this game with the intention of winning it.
Just that Bohs average 1.8 goals per game at home which is considerably above average in the league, so you’re better off factoring in Both Teams To Score.
Derry City v Sligo Rovers – Sligo and the Draw
I cannot state enough how things have turned sour in the Brandywell over Ruaidhri Higgins’ interest in the Barnsley job. A team that generally used their cohesive nature to beat teams in big games now seem like they’ll have to rely upon little more than their personal motivations.
Sligo had been abysmal up until that shock win over Bohs last week, so combining that with the wave of uncertainty makes me think that the Sligo Win/Draw double chance is the smart play here.
Drogheda v Shamrock Rovers – Rovers to Win
Is my logic that a team who historically scalp Rovers, and who are coming up against a Hoops side who’ve just been beaten and are anticipating Europe, will simply lie down and lose here?
Kind of – but it’s more due to the fact that the majority of what Drogs did well in the last six weeks was down to the exploits of Freddie Draper and I can’t help but think Adam Foley will struggle to pick up that slack. I don’t think Rovers concede, so my wager is really on them to score – which, given the talent in the final third – should be a safe bet. It’s Rovers to Win.
St Patrick’s v Cork City – Pat’s to Win
As Bryan Adams rightly sang – you can’t stop this thing we started. Now I’m not sure he was specifically speaking of a title challenge coming from Inchicore, or the subpar performances of Cork City on their travels, but it was definitely one of them.
City will need an overhaul in the transfer window, and with that, comes middling performances. Luckily for them, they’ve only got to finish ahead of Drogheda so there’s no huge issue. Home Win here.
UCD v Shelbourne – Under 2.5 Goals
Bringing in Eanna Clancy is a big boost for UCD but having shipped seven last week, I reckon they’ve been absolutely torn to shreds now. Shels cannot score against teams who sit in, so taking Under 2.5 Goals here is the only logical bet. Remember that Shels’ most disappointing result of the season came at this very venue only a couple of months ago.
