Oleeee – ole, ole, ole! Strike up the band, don the green and get those visas sorted before you land in Australia because, believe me, one of your cousins has done something wrong in that part of the world. Consider that fair warning. For all that we’re easily putting our eggs in one big hope-laden basket, there is a tonne of realism required here.
This Ireland team are a fantastic group and does contain one bona fide superstar who’d play for any team in Europe outside of maybe Barcelona, Wolfsburg and PSG. You’d do well to every say that about any Irish export.
But this France team alone could put six past Ireland without getting out of third gear and this is the challenge we’re facing. The prices suggest the same, but my biggest worry here is that France taken a relaxed approach given their massive injury crisis, and Ireland grab a result – sending the optimism into the stratosphere.
So, is Tallaght Stadium going to be the scene of Ireland’s realisation that they’re very much up against it, or the origin of a scalp? Let’s pray for the latter while expecting the former.
Republic of Ireland (+3)
I’m here for the moral victories as you know. And a 2-0 loss here is exactly what I’m searching for – and it’s the most likely scoreline too. But just in case France are really struggling to put everything together, I’ll take Ireland covering with three goals in-hand rather than the correct score.
France will make mass changes at half-time and that will leave the game disjointed. It’s also due to rain torrentially in Tallaght, so the game won’t be benefitting any sort of free-flowing football. Let’s have Ireland (+3).
Under 2.5 Goals
Presuming my previous point about the weather is read, I’d also like to add that a result is the last thing on anyone’s mind – so chasing goals when going behind doesn’t make sense, nor does piling on.
What you’ll have here is fringe players trying to stake their case in a second half, despite having never played together as a cohesive unit and the game will descend into a huge anti-climax in the rain.
It’s funny how, despite the world of analytics available to us, the things we’re banking on are Irish weather and people still not caring about friendlies. Side with Under 2.5 Goals.
Both Teams to Score? No
Both Teams to Score? Absolutely bloody not. Wendie Renard will play the first half and that alone means Ireland won’t be finding the breakthrough.
Herve Renard can bank on playing his first-choice back four because of set piece delivery drills, so when Ireland are scoreless at half-time, there’s no chance their second XI will be capitalising in the second forty-five.
Clara Mateo to Score Anytime
France are struggling without Marie-Antoinette Katoto, that much is clear and obvious. But their depth behind her in the pecking order is great – and they’ve turned to a veteran in Eugénie Le Sommer and a rookie in Mateo to provide ammunition.
Mateo has netted four times in her 21 appearances, and while she’s only lining out for Paris FC, you can guarantee an offer from Lyon or PSG after a successful World Cup campaign. We’ll round off with Clara Mateo to Score Anytime on Thursday night.
