Most of my nostalgic football memories revolve around getting up at weird hours to watch my national team at a World Cup. I remember crying into my breakfast as Gaizka Mendieta struck a penalty past Shay Given in the 2002 World Cup so distinctly that I can’t even visit that part of the world now for fear of breaking down into a Spanish-fuelled episode.
But I wouldn’t swap them, either. It’s what makes tournament football all that it is. Due to mass scheduling, you become programmed to expect football at a certain time, only to be surprised when it pops up on your telly at a certain hour.
And thanks to the success of the Irish Women this year, I get to proudly watch us come undone against stronger nations before turning back into existential crises about funding again, citing what could have been. But never mind – a World Cup!
The timings are whacky; I’ll barely have my Coco Pops to-hand by the time we’re six-nil up against Australia. I jest. But it’s worth having a few tournament-long wagers in your back pocket so you can maintain interest throughout. So let’s take a look at both the best bets and the best value bets in the primary markets.
Outright Winners
Best Bet – France
I understand that this squad is ravaged by injuries, but the key issue for this French side was internal politics. Wendie Renard was very vocal about how she simply would no longer accept the conditions set out by previous management, and now they’ve hilariously hired Herve Renard to pacify the squad.
And I’m not even truly convinced they haven’t done it because their best player shares his surname. Their squad is deep, and while they’re definitely without a few key players, the fact they can simply just recall Eugenie Le Sommer into the squad is incredible.
They’re pound for pound the most talented unit going to Australia and New Zealand and I think the smart money goes on France To Win Outright.
Best Value – Netherlands
Similar concept whereby the Dutch team just couldn’t stick Mark Parsons. Imagine that – an insufferable Englishman going to try and use his weird terminology to try and gloss over a nation whose footballing culture was led by Johann Cruyff.
IMAGINE.
But away from that, Viv Miedema will miss the tournament but the selection will now be far less muddled than it was under Parsons, with the likes of Esmee Brugts likely getting picked on form rather than reputation. They’re a happier camp and The Netherlands could end up causing a shock.

To Reach the Final
Best Bet – USA
This is simply down to their path, and when you consider the principles, England should have a considerably harder time of it than their American cousins.
The US path to the final likely reads: Italy, Norway, Spain. England’s? Canada, Germany, France. I know where I’d prefer to place my money. It’s USA to reach the final.
Best Value – Italy
It’s only down to the possible implosions they’ll face along the way. First up, they’ve got the US – and while they’re the tournament favourites, getting them in the Round of 16 is far better than doing it later on in the bracket. They’re an ageing unit and I can’t help but think they’ll have to manage the bodies as the games pile up.
If they did cause that scalp, they probably land lowly Norway before going up against a Spanish side who are basically still not bought into RFEF’s handling of their current management setup. Don’t miss out on Italy To Reach The Final.
