England (-2)
Am I being slightly cheeky here? Maybe a bit, but let me go through England’s results against sides who aren’t at this World Cup.
They beat Belgium 6-1, Luxembourg 10-0, Northern Ireland 5-0, Belgium 6-1, North Macedonia 10-0. It goes on.
Now Portugal did indeed qualify for the tournament but they were blessed with their playoff draw, having only to get past Cameroon in the final rather than Scotland or Ireland.
England generally don’t rest on their laurels, particularly as players are trying to get into the first XI of the tournament for their opening in three weeks’ time.
This England team could comfortably put up six here – and don’t forget that Portugal were battered by Sweden in the Euros before England ripped the Swedes apart in a later round.
Alessia Russo to Score Anytime
Russo is one of those players who can prove quite a problem for her own manager. She’s incredibly productive but ideally not the type of player you want on from the start because her biggest qualities are her first touch, ability to beat a player and her aerial prowess.
She’s not exactly conducive to the intricate stuff in front of goal or timing her runs – give her the ball to feet and have her run at players.
Now, seeing as Wiegman will likely start with her up top to see how that looks on Saturday, she’ll likely be out to prove the point that she can be the number nine to carry England.
And without any disrespect, if she wants to, she’ll score against Portugal.
Both Teams to Score – Yes
Ah, yeah. England haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last four games, and that includes concessions against Italy and Belgium – both of whom are in or around Portugal’s level.
It’s just not been a focus of England to be solid and try to win games that are tight. In a way it makes them exciting, but in another way, it makes them less mechanical.
Over 1.5 First Half Goals
This game will be won at half-time, and should lead to wholesale changes in the second half. At least that will be the hope as Wiegman doesn’t want key players exerting themselves here for no reason.
Since the final of the Euros, England have scored in nine of their eleven games. Of those nine games, England have found the net in every single one of them.
It’s a habit.
